A Pretty Good Machine

Pros Great screen, light, fast, cool, unsurpassed keyboard
Cons Pricey, limited software, dated interface
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If your tastes lean toward a MAC, and you want to write on something different from a Win box.
This is my first Apple and I like most everything about it. I did have white spots on the screen and a week back at the factory apparently took care of it.(Being a Windows guy all these years I'm not used to a voice mail from tech support that says,"Mr. Harris. We have your G4 back and the screen now looks absolutely gorgeous! and ready for you to pick up...")
The G4 looks cool, is light and the screen, now without the factory defect, does outshine the other two laptops I have in the house. I use this one for writing. Appleworks is several notches below anything on a Windows box however-I had to spring for $129 for Office for the Mac. If you are a software junkie pass on the MAC.
I didn't get the superdrive-Haven't found a need for writable DVD yet, but I do like the CD-RW and the DVD player on the screen. The slot drive is quietly my favorite improvement over Windows laptops that pop out.
The aluminum or titanium or whatever shell gets cold!
I got the wireless Airport card and like that it doesn't stick out and is inside the small shell. It also carries a stronger signal than the two wireless ports of my other laptops.
I don't find the environment all that user-friendly. XP has it beat- Lots of pretty features with the Apple but not as easy to store files, find exe's, etc. MAC people will no doubt say its my problem, but the user-interface people at Apple need to get over themselves and start innovating again. Their Finder is dated and, while I like the Web browser, Safari, it's not as easy to use as Explorer, or as flexible. And please! On the next version, when I click on another instance of Safari, open up another Safari! What's with that!
The silver keyboard and black lettering of the keys make it the best laptop I own for typing in low-light environments. This is a big selling point. Don't bother paying for the cool upgrade of backlit keys-with the brightness of the screen and the color scheme of the keyboard, backlighting is overkill, battery draining, and way costly.
All in all, I think the 2 grand I paid give me a screen and portibility with the slot drive, internal wireless, and lightweight design that eaks out a win over a Windows machine.
