Not your good old Mac

Pros Powerful, Beautiful Display, Loud speakers, Easy internal access
Cons Bluetooth Range, battery life
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Its a step forward on power but a big step backwards otherwise
After graduating from an iBook G4 to a MacBook Core 2 Duo 4 years ago I figured it was time to step up again.  First of all, the biggest improvement in these models vs the old Core 2 models is that you can EASILY access the hard drive, RAM, and optical bay by simply removing the bottom cover which is important because my first move was installing a Corsair 115GB SSD as well as replacing the optical drive with a 640GB Samsung Spinpoint 7200 hard drive (using a newmodeUS drive caddy) and doing a fresh install of OSX.  The machine is extremely snappy and powerful and it's also a good bit lighter than my old 13".  Transfering data from my old macbook to my new one was just as easy as ever using Time Machine and I was up and running on my new machine with less than 5 hours of work (including swapping hardware, installing OS, and transfering entire hard drive contents).
While there are a lot of good things about this machine I really am starting to feel that Macs are starting to drift away from the quality and performance that they were once known for.  One of the huge issues that I have with this machine is the bluetooth range -- it's horrible.  I constantly use bluetooth audio while I'm at work so I can walk around and still listen to music and this new machine has less than 1/4 of the range that I had with my previous MacBook in the same exact enviornment with the same bluetooth transport devices.  To make that matter even more frustrating OSX refuses to use a USB bluetooth device since the internal one can not be turned off.
Aside from the bluetooth issue, I have a few more complaints about the new models.  When it comes to battery life I appreciate that the batteries last a little longer than the older MacBooks BUT don't expect to get more than half of what Apple claims.  Even without using bluetooth I still generally can't get more than 4 hours on a full charge and if I am using bluetooth or any USB devices that drops to 3 and sometimes even 2 hours -- this wasn't an issue with my old MacBook because I could have spare batteries with me but that is a thing of the past which is quite frustrating.
On the subject of video I have to say that the screen is amazing and the nVidia card is fairly impressive, however, it's not anywhere near the performance that I would have expected.  When playing The Sims 3 I have seen quite a few rendering delays even with rendering options slightly reduced.... Additionally, I don't like that they replaced the external video ports of the prior Macs with a displayport mainly because it removes the option of TV-out without a clunky converter box.  Like I said, its not bad -- I just don't think it's what I would expect out of a $1500 computer.
