The Bottom Line:
I would recommend the 21.5" iMac to anyone because of its performance and value!
I have recently purchased a new 21.5" iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core I3 computer. I have owned it for about 2 weeks now and I absolutely love the quality of product I have received. The form factor of it being an "all-in-one" computer make it a great compliment to any desk. Without the tower and extra wiring, it makes for a clean and sleek look on the desk. The all aluminum casing provides a sturdy feel to the machine. I have not noticed much plastic exposed on the computer. It looks rock solid! After firing it up, the screen looked just great. It has an IPS panel screen which allows for maximum viewing angles without color distortion within the display. The colors are vibrant with the whites bright and the blacks rather dark. The computer itself boots up from a cold start in about 34 seconds which was faster than my Dell laptop by far. The applications installed are the iLife '11 suite with iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband as well as the typical mail client. I currently am running Time Machine with a Hitachi G-Drive 1TB external hard drive and it has run flawlessly. The interface has been something to get used to as I was coming from a PC but the transition has been made smoothly. There does appear to be a faint yellow tinting towards the bottom of the screen so I may take it in to the Apple store to have it checked out. As far as peripherals go, it comes standard with a wireless keyboard and mouse. The keyboard is rather small as it lacks the numeric keypad of older Apple keyboard designs but the mouse named the Magic Mouse is quite fascinating. It does not have a scroll wheel but instead the top has a touch interface that when fingers are run down over the top, it scrolls down as well as up and to the sides. It is quite innovative and I enjoy working with it. The only knock on the mouse is that it is Very low profile and is not the most comfortable in the hand, ergonomically speaking. The keyboard and mouse both connect to the computer via Bluetooth. Wired connectivity to the iMac is done an the back of it's lower-right side. There are 4 USB ports, an audio line-in port, headphone port, firewire 800 port, miniDisplay port (NOT miniDVI like it used to be), and an ethernet port. I have not found any issues with these ports or their location. Some may complain that the USB ports are not as easily accessible as some monitors that feature the ports on the side but it has not been a major issue to me. The DVD Superdrive is located on the right side of the computer along with an SD Card slot which can fit up to SDXD size cards for larger storage.Rounding off this review, I would highly recommend this computer to anyone who needs to purchase a baseline Mac computer. For the price it is a great machine and I am ever pleased with its performance. Thank you for reading my review.
