It's the radio the iPod is missing, and a remote control.

Pros Small, light weight, it adds an FM stereo radio, a wired remote and ear buds.
Cons Too bad it's an add on product.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Worth getting if you want either a radio or remote control, and they add a set of ear buds to sweeten the deal
The Apple Remote Control Radio for the iPod adds an FM stereo radio and wired remote control to most models of the iPod Video, Classic and Nano. Priced at $50, the radio probably should have been built into the iPod, but it also gives you a handy wired remote control and an extra set of iPod ear buds. The remote control radio requires no batteries. It's powered by the rechargeable batteries in your iPod.

The Apple Remote Control Radio is tiny. It's the size of the iPod shuffle, or a quarter inch thick commemorative postage stamp, and has a simple up, down, left, right, and center button array to control the radio or iPod. There's a wired connection about three feet long that runs from the radio to the auxiliary port on the iPod. The ear buds then plug into a standard jack on the top of the remote. The clip on the back of the remote control grabs securely to the any thin item it's attached to. I usually attach it to the front placket of my shirt when I'm out taking a walk.

The default mode when you attach the device is as a remote control. You can start, stop, and skip forward and backward through your selected tracks. Pressing the up or down portions of the button control ring let you adjust the volume. Since I usually carry my iPod classic in my shirt pocket, it makes rapid volume adjustment easy without the need to remove the iPod from my pocket, and risk dropping it.

When you attach the remote control radio, it adds "Radio" as a menu item on the iPod. You select the Radio setting, and the display of your iPod turns into a tuner. The radio can memorize up to twenty different stations, has digital tuning, and if the radio station you are listening to has RDS or Radio Data System abilities, it will show you the station name and sometimes the name of the track being played. When you detach the remote from your iPod, the Radio menu item is removed from the iPod's menu, but the settings are retained until the next time you use the radio.

The radio's reception is pretty good. I use it at work, a brick and steel frame building that has lots of florescent lights and computers, and I still get acceptable reception, but I seldom get the display of RDS data in the building. Out on the street, the radio works well

The included ear buds appear to be Apple standard issue ear buds with a shorter connecting wires, only about three feet long. As far as I can tell they sound like the standard ear bud.

All in all, the Apple Remote Control and Radio for the iPod isn't a bad deal. If you went to the Apple store, they'd charge you $29 for replacement ear buds, so you can think of it as getting the remote control and radio for just twenty dollars more.
