It's nice to see some less expensive DVD players out on the market. However, I was pretty reluctant to purchase an Apex when we first started offering them at Circuit City.
Two models were offered; the Apex AD500A and the Apex AD600A. The first has been priced by our store from $99-$139, depending on whatever special we were offering. The second is offered at $149-$179. The main reason the 500A is cheaper is because it lacks the mp3 features the 600A has. With the S-video hookup, you will probably see a little better aud/vid quality with the 600A as well depending on your wiring and television. However, several of the Apex AD500A models have been having a number of problems, most frequently they would play for 30-60 minutes before powering off permanently. Most retail outlets have started substituting the 500B upgrade series because of the number of glitches related to the A series. The AD600A series has been a good model at an excellent price. If you are only looking for something to play DVD/CDs with, the I would recommend the AD600A. If you are looking for something with better features (and a much more user friendly remote), you might want to try a Sony DVP360, which a much more versatile "standard" in the DVD community.
