My parents bought a big Sony TV, and they were given this Apex DVD System as a free throw-in. They hooked it up, but couldn't get it to work, so it sat there, unused, until I went home for Christmas.
The hookup problem was not a fault with the system - they had plugged everywhich wire into every slot possible, so that nothing made sense. Easy to fix. Then, we watched a few movies on it - first Fantasia 2000, then The Gladiator, and then Final Destination. During the Gladiator, there were quite a few instances of the DVD player freezing for a few seconds, and then coming back to life. By the end of Final Destination, the whole screen was garbled with huge blue and red blocks across it. The Apex DVD player had broken by the third movie. Disgraceful. Sure, it was free, but if I had bought it, or if getting a free DVD player had swayed my opinion of whether or not to buy the TV, I would be mightily annoyed!
The whole quality of the system is no match to my recently purchased Sony DVD player, even when it was working properly. My parents have better speakers, stereo system, and TV than I do, but I get better sound and pictures with my Sony DVD player.
If you are buying a DVD player, spend the extra $50 and get yourself a good quality one - even the lowest Sony is far better than this Apex.
