Apex is great, but........

byUpnya Jul 21, 2000
Pros great price, tons of cool features
Cons probably wont have the "loophole" menu
Recommended it? Yes
The Apex is a great DVD player for the cost. I got mine last week at Circuit City for about $179. There are a few misleading reviews here though. I think it's only fair to warn everyone who is considering buying the Apex on a few details..
One of the main reasons I got my Apex was to play Mp3's through my stereo instead of my computer. When I inserted a disc of mp3's into the Apex it would only display the first 14 mp3's on each disc that I tried. That was a problem for me considering each of my discs had about 170+ song on them. In all fairness to the Apex, the 14 that it did display sounded AWESOME.. I was just a little disappointed. Also, the unit that I picked up last week does NOT have the secret "loophole menu". It has been removed for good.

* Note: if you have an older Apex 600A you can access the loophole menu by: Hit the 'setup' button on the remote, then highlight the 'preferences' option and hit the 'step' button. Then hit the track backwards button followed by the track forwards button. The loophole menu will then appear stating "You should not be here".. :)

I have seen places on the web offering a $40 "mod chip" for the new Apex's, but I haven't tried to modify mine yet. I hope to soon, and when I do I'll write back to tell how easy it was. I found step-by-step instructions on how to make the modification with pictures, at this link: http://sites.netscape.net/kenantonelli/apexinstr/apexinstructions1.html#Instructions (if you have an newer Apex, check it out it doesn't look too hard to do.)

So, to make a long story short, the newer Apex's, mine included, are a great buy for the money, with or without all the secrets. And if you plan to be listening to a lot of mp3's with it please keep this in mind. I spoke to a guy named "Diego" at Apex, and he said that the Apex will most successfully play mp3's burned in ISO format and NOT JOLIET format. And most importantly if you are lucky enough to have an older Apex with the secret menu DO NOT SEND IT IN TO APEX FOR REPAIRS. If you do, when you get it back they will have disabled the secret menu!!! (Per Apex)
