And The Band Played On. . .one of my all time favorite movies, as it tells the truth about WHY Aides was so rampant in our society BEFORE the government would DO anything about it. This movie is historical in nature, one that will be shown, hopefully, in schools as years go by.
Trust your government to tell you the truth, all the time, when it comes to outbreaks? Watch this true account of the AIDES virus, and how it was NOT taken care of with the greatest attention, before you decide. As an example of government 'tampering with the truth', I offer my county's fight with the fiddle back spider. This is a spider that bites you, and then, you are nearly sure to die. If you don't die, your skin WILL be eaten from the inside by the venom, and the toxins WILL destroy your ability to lead a normal life. These spiders are colonizing in Humboldt County at this time. I have this from the man in charge of the finding of these colonies, and of destroying them, WITHOUT allowing the general public to know that they exist!
In the movie, And The Band Played On, the movie goer is shown how quickly the main carrier of the disease was discovered. It shows how the investigators begged for government help for intervention. It shows how the government lied regarding the true numbers of those infected. Money was not alloted to give these investigators the help they HAD to have, nor was the O.K. given to let the American People understand how serious and rampant the Virus was. Lies upon lies were announced to the public. The public was assured that it was only a 'GAY' disease. Those who worked in the laboratory industry, with blood samples, could NOT get the Virus if they were not GAY! People who were not actively gay felt an extreme sense of false security that they could NOT get the virus. It, also, made many, many Americans say cruel things, like: "Good, let them kill themselves off! It's God's way of getting rid of them!". . .I heard those type statements, and they scared me to death! I have gay family members, that I didn't want to die! How was it spread, I wanted to know. How could gay people NOT get it, I wanted to know.
Although, much had been learned that would have kept the Virus from becoming the monstrously large terror that it became, the government would not allow the investigative scientists to TELL the American Public. So, more and more people died, needlessly, as the government tried to keep it under wraps. More people died, as they were afraid of being labeled as gay. Even Rock Hudson would, probably, have started trying to get earlier treatment, if the word 'GAY' hadn't held the negative connotation that it did. If the idea of using a condom had been released much earlier, how many people would still be alive? If the fact that babies should be born NOT through the birth canal, how many babies would be alive, today?
And The Band Played On is a movie that I recommend for everyone to see. See how much time was lost in tracking this disease, in keeping people safe who COULD have been, ALL because of politics. If this movie doesn't make you cry, you are very different than myself. It is a lesson for Americans. So many funerals that didn't need to happen.
