MMORPG for the future
Pros
Breath taking graphics. Missions. Your own apartment to furnish
Cons
Game is in it's early stages and tends to kick players off frequently
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This game promises to be a great MMORPG once some of the gaming issues are taken care of.
MMORPG set in the future?
Damn Skippy! And it's an awsome game to boot.
I've played many MMORPG's, but this one definitely has a promising future (no pun intended).
I got my first experience in MMORPG gaming with Ultima Online. I started playing UO when it first came out and I was in awe of the gaming experience. I won't lie, I was ticked off at it a lot in the beginning because of the lag and issues with the servers crashing, but I stuck through it and really enjoyed what the game evolved into.
That is the direction that Anarchy Online is heading. The game itself is unlike all of those other MMORPG's due to the fact that it's set in the future and there is a continual story that is changing the world around you. Plus, when you start you get to choose which faction that you are going to join, which helps to add to the ongoing story line.

What the game is about
Like I said, this game is set in the future. Humanity eventually destroys planet earth (like that one is hard to see coming), and we have to find a new planet to slowly destroy again. Rubi-ka is our new home planet. Unfortunately, it is owned and operated by a large, Microsoft type corporation (Omni Tech) that rules with an iron fist.
Omni Tech is a huge mining corporation that owns Rubi-ka. They set up a small mining camp on the planet that, over time, grew into a LARGE city. Back when they first started mining on the planet, some of the miners got together and decided to fight Omni Tech due to the horrible conditions that the miners were forced to live and work in.
The first squabble between Omni Tech and the miners ended in a bunch of dead miners, but eventually enough miners got tire of the conditions, so they ran off to live on the planet free of Omni Tech's control. The miners prospered on the far side of Rubi-ka and had children and grandchildren. As time went on, the ex-miners families began forming Clans. These Clans have a burning hatred for anything Omni tech, and will go out of there way to kill anyone representing the Hitler-esque company.
Some of the people decided that they wanted nothing to do with battle, so they left the clans and decided to find their own piece of land to live on as Neutrals.
Omni Tech decided that they would let these Neutral dwellers live in peace as long as they stayed Neutral. The Clans decided the same thing, but occasionally some Neutrals would get in the way between an Omni Tech and Clan battle, so some Neutrals would end up dead.
The different factions
As I stated above, you can choose between the three factions when starting a new character.
Omni Tech
Clan
Neutral
I'm a clan player myself, but to each his own.
Each faction has it's advantages and disadvantages. But, early into your character you don't have to worry about any disadvantages. That part will come once your a higher level character.
The different races to choose from
Like all of the other MMORPG's, you get to choose which race you prefer to choose from. Of course there are no Elves or Dwarves, but I think you will find the races of Rubi-ka interesting enough. They are as follows:
Solis: This is your basic, run of the mill, Human. They are the most well rounded of the races on Rubi-ka. All of their skills are equal across the board and they are suited for most any profession.
Atrox: This race is genetically engineered for power. They are 100% muscle and have tiny little heads. They cannot breed and are genetically neuter (meaning you can't choose which sex you prefer). All Atrox character look male due to their size and muscle mass. Their not the smartest race on the planet, but they are fun to play as Soldiers and Enforcers.
Nano: These character are basically cyborgs. There fun to play, but hard to get the hang of. They are good at using Nano Technology, which is basically Rubi-ka's version of Magery. The character are mostly ugly, but have you ever seen what the Borg did to Capt. Piccard on Star Trek NG.
Opifex: This race is also genetically engineered. They are on the opposite side of the scale as the Atrox however. Opifex are small and skinny. They were engineered for mining and staying down in "the hole" for long periods of time.
The Professions
There are many professions to choose from when starting a new character. I especially like this aspect of the game because it adds a little more excitement to your playing experience. I will tell you the professions, but I'm not going into detail about what each profession does. You would be reading all day if I did and I'm sure I've already lost many readers this far down. The professions are as follows:
Adventurer, Agent, Bureaucrat, Doctor, Enforcer, Engineer, Fixer, Martial Artist, Meta-Physicist, Nano-Technician, Soldier, and Trader
Each profession is best suited for different races, but not specifically designed for. Atrox's are not the smartest of the races, but with a little work you can create an Atrox Doctor or Meta-Physicist.
Now for the complaint department
LAG and lot's of it. The game has a problem at the moment where it uses up the memory in your 3D card and then won't turn it free. This creates LAG whenever you "gate" to a different area; especially when you enter a new town. I am constantly having to re-boot my computer to free up the memory on my 3D card so that I can get rid of the LAG.
There is also a problem at the moment that kicks you off of the game when "gating" from one place to another.
FUNCOM, the creators of Anarchy Online, are working hard to repair these problems. Many gamers believe, myself included, that the game shouldn't have been released until these issues were dealt with.
I just keep reminding myself that Ultima Online had these very same problems when it was first released also. Any game of this size would have to be a serious pain in the you know what when it comes to dealing with a couple thousand angry gamers. That is why I am SURE that they have tech's working day and night to fix these problems.
The Bottom Line
The game is "the bomb". I'm hooked on it. If you can handle the LAG then you should get it. If LAG makes you want to put your fist through your monitor, then you should wait a couple of months before purchasing this game.
If you do get this game and create your character on the Rubi-ka 1 server, then look me up. My preferred character is a Solis Soldier named Kreedin. I'm always looking for new friends to go out adventuring with.
