Amistad

Based on actual events in 1838, AMISTAD is the story of captured African slaves who took over their transport ship in a bloody revolt with the hopes of returning back to their homeland. After the slaves are caught and imprisoned, their leader, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou), unable to understand the language or court system of America, tries to communicate his desire to return home to his defense lawyer, Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), and former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman). The men plead for help with their groundbreaking court case from former president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins). Steven Spielberg directed this moving film, using as a reference the book by William A. Owens, BLACK MUTINY: THE REVOLT ON THE SCHOONER AMISTAD. The Africans in the movie speak Mende, with subtitles added. West African actor Djimon Hounsou had to learn to speak the language for his role--and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Pros great acting, script, attention to detail
Cons Hollywood had to tell this story - not our history textbooks!

I have to admit that my greatest emotion after having seen this movie was anger... Anger that I never learned of this incident throughout my school years. Despite being and Advanced Placement student, not one of my courses ever touched on the La Amistad incident.

A Story You Never Heard In School, And Frankly, Rightfully So. 'Amistad'

Pros Acting. Some emotion.
Cons The rest of the emotion. 'PC' run wild initial acclaim.
Recommended it? No

There are few more shining examples of the Spielbergification of a story than 'Amistad'. Couple that with a story that starts out, PC derring-do aside, ultimately not that interesting, and a short six years after its release it is already quickly slipping into total obscurity.

Amistad vs. Titanic? Ah...1997...Spielberg's Second Historical Epic

byJiggyJay May 2, 2010
30 Helpfuls 31 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, interesting, some great scenes
Cons Too long, unimpressive score by John Williams, hammy, historical inaccuracies
Recommended it? No

1997's Amistad was one of those movies of Steven Spielberg's I didn't see until recently. Don't get me wrong: Spielberg was a big hit in my household, but surprisingly enough this wasn't screened for us kids. Instead we got Schindler's List (but that's enough story) (= Jewish mother).
