Amistad: The History We Were Never Taught
I have to admit that my greatest emotion after having seen this movie was anger... Anger that I never learned of this incident throughout my school years. Despite being and Advanced Placement student, not one of my courses ever touched on the La Amistad incident.

A Story You Never Heard In School, And Frankly, Rightfully So. 'Amistad'
There are few more shining examples of the Spielbergification of a story than 'Amistad'. Couple that with a story that starts out, PC derring-do aside, ultimately not that interesting, and a short six years after its release it is already quickly slipping into total obscurity.

Amistad vs. Titanic? Ah...1997...Spielberg's Second Historical Epic

The Africans in the movie speak Mende with subtitles added. West African actor Djimon Hounsou had to learn to speak the language for his role--and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Spielberg shot the film at the State House in Providence Rhode Island the seaport in Mystic Connecticut and other New England locations.
