My monitor, big small green black? Why?

I've had my Compaq MV520 for a little over a year now. I purchased it when I bought my computer. I thought this monitor would be good for me, its a 15" monitor 13.8" viewable. it doesn't take up too much room which is good because I have it in my bedroom. A cool feature about it is that it has the microphone built into the top of the monitor. It is just a whole with some slots on it which is pretty nifty.
Now a bad thing about this monitor is that since I do have it in my room it heats it up a lot. I don't know if this is as common on other monitors. But when I am using the computer for about an hour or so, I have to either open my door or open a window a little because it becomes a sauna in my room.
The monitor has no problem with colors, graphics, animation or anything it is a very good monitor but recently probably over the past 2-3 months it has been getting worse that sometimes my monitor will just click on and off and it will shrink and turn green. This gets very annoying because I know that it is not good for the monitor to constantly be turning on and off and it is also very annoying when I'm in the middle of a game or something.
Also, one thing that comes with the monitor is the speakers. They are JBL Pro Speakers. These speakers are extremely clear and free standing which is nice. They aren't the loudest but since they are so clear it seems that the sound travels a far distance.
All in all, the monitor is good not too big for a small cramped areas and the price isn't too high. But a caution for others is that my monitor has been giving me problems recently, that doesn't mean it will happen to other people but it is happening to me.
