The Bottom Line:  A great pump for a low price. You can take it anywhere (literally).
From a previous review, you may know that I used a Pump In Style by Medela for both of my first two children. In October, our family was complete when daughter Peyton was born. Because of my extensive prior use of the Pump In Style and my decision to pump exclusively this time, I was not certain it would have enough life left to meet my needs. Even though I liked the Pump In Style, I did not want to pay $300 for another one. I started looking for a different kind of pump.

With a little online research, I found that the Purely Yours dual electric pump by Ameda has been compared to the Pump In Style in terms of reliability. It is also less expensive. The Purely Yours with all of its accessories can be found new at various websites for under $175. Without accessories, the basic pump can be purchased for even less. It also has a unique system that prevents milk from backing up into the pump. For this reason, this pump can be easily purchased used at www.eBay.com.

I found someone on eBay selling their Purely Yours for $69, with free shipping and handling. I was informed that it had been used for only a short period of time, and was in "like new" condition. I felt that the low price made buying the used pump a worthwhile risk.

The system of hoses and horns for the Purely Yours is called a Hygenikit. It is this system that prevents the milk from getting into the pump itself. It consists of two hoses and a small white connector that attaches the hoses to the pump. The hoses each attach to a cap that goes onto a "horn". (This "horn" covers your breast when pumping.) Between the cap and horn fits a flexible, cup-shaped piece of rubber. Milk cannot get past this piece. There is also a small white rubber part that goes on the bottom of the horn to maintain suction. Milk flows through this piece and into any standard sized bottle for milk collection. This kit can be used to double pump both breasts simultaneously. It can also be converted to pumping one breast at a time. I found the parts to be easy to put together.

The Purely Yours pump has adjustable suction strength and cycle speed. Each is controlled by a small dial on the pump itself. Changing the strength and speed can help a pumping mom to get better results with the pump. A quick, strong action helps to get the milk flowing, while a moderate strength and speed are useful once the initial letdown has occurred.

The Purely Yours pump comes with its own carrying case, the Hygenikit, six 4-ounce bottles and lids, three cooling elements, an instruction manual, and an A/C adapter. The pump itself can be removed from the bag and takes up very little space on its own. The bag has a large compartment on top, made to hold the pump and A/C adapter. It has two areas on bottom that are specially insulated. With the cooling elements placed into one of these compartments, pumped milk can be stored in the bag for up to 10 hours safely. The other compartment can hold the Hygenikit or other spare parts. There is also a pocket on the outside of the bag, good for spare change or other small odds and ends. There is an adjustable length shoulder strap as well as handles for carrying. If purchasing the basic pump, you will receive the Hygenikit for dual pumping, two 4-ounce bottles and caps, along with the pump and A/C cord. (The pump and required parts can easily be carrying in any bag that you already have. You can also find a small insulated bag and reusable cooling elements at your local Wal-mart or Target for a very low price.)

The Purely Yours may be run off electricity as already mentioned. It can also be used with six AA batteries (not included) or with an adapter to fit in your car's cigarette lighter (also not included). This adapter can be found for about $15. Because of the three power options, it would be impossible to end up in a situation where you could not use this pump. (Unlike the Pump In Style, which cannot be operated with batteries.) I have used all three power sources, and can report no noticeable difference in strength or suction. I have used the battery option about 5-6 times over the past two weeks, and have not yet used them up. (I didn't expect them to last this long, but have been pleasantly surprised so far.)

Because I pump exclusively (I do not breast feed directly, but get all the milk for my daughter by pumping) I sometimes have to store a lot of milk in the cold compartment of the carrying bag. As mentioned before, the pump comes with six 4-ounce bottles. Each of these actually holds about 5.5 ounces, for a total of 33 ounces. Medela brand bottles, however, have a capacity of 6.5 ounces per bottle and Gerber bottles hold 10.5 ounces each. I can fit six of the Medela brand for 39 ounces, or four Gerber bottles for 42 ounces in the carrying bag. The Pump In Style only holds four of its own bottles (or four of any brand 4-ounce bottle) for a maximum of 26 ounces.

I have many spare parts for my Pump In Style, and did not want to purchase spares for the Purely Yours. I found that the Medela brand hoses fit on the white connector that plugs into the Purely Yours pump. I still get the same suction and strength as when I use the Hygenikit. Using Medela parts, however, will void your warranty because milk could get into the system. (This is not likely to happen, and I did not have a warranty as I am not the original user.)

All of this has hopefully been useful information, but the real question that needs answering is "How does this pump measure up?" I get the same results with the Purely Yours as I do with the Pump In Style. Because of the portability of the Purely Yours, I take it with me everywhere. I do still use the Pump In Style at home, however. I can report no differences in my pumping success with the two pumps. My Pump In Style, however, only has 3 strength options and no speed options. (I have the 1998 model. Newer Pump In Styles have 5 strength choices and 3 speed options.) If I were buying my first pump, I would choose the Purely Yours over the Pump In Style for its price and portability.

While I am thrilled with this pump, I do have some minor complaints. The bag is very bulky, and does not have the sleek business look of the Pump In Style bag. It is made of a canvas type material, but the Pump In Style is in a leather looking bag. Also, when the Purely Yours pump is in the carrying bag, it can be top heavy. The pump itself is a little noisy, with a slight beeping noise in addition to the "whine" of the motor.

The Purely Yours is made to handle the heavy pumping schedule of a full time working mom or exclusive pumper. Even so, it is affordable enough for the mom who pumps for an occasional night out or part time job. If you are looking to buy a breast pump, look no further!
