Fantastic for the Full Time Pumper!
Pros
The best double electric pump on the market! Cheaper that Medela, but works better!
Cons
NOTHING!
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Gentle, adjustable, and efficient
I love, love, love this breast pump! With my second child I was determined to breastfeed. When that didn't go well at all, I decided pumping was the next best thing. This pump allowed me to pump EVERYDAY, typically 5 times a day, for 7 months. (My daughter has enough frozen breastmilk in the freezer to last her until her first birthday!)
I purchased this pump used on Ebay at a fraction of the price. I know, you're not supposed to do that, but this system actually prevents milk from backing into the tubes or pump (unlike Medela) so, no milk will ever touch the pump or the tubes. As for the horns, white valves, and silicone cylinders they are all able to be sterilized (and were so after each use.) I saved so much money buying one used that I bought a second one to use upstairs, too! (Remember I was a full time pumper and it's a pain the have to move your pump around.) Bottom line, I got a fantastic pump at a fantastic price!
What comes with this pump when bought new: The pump itself, a black microfiber shoulder bag, a smaller Cool'n Carry bag that contains 6 Ameda bottles, rings, and stoppers, and 3 blue ice freezer packs. You also get 2 breast flanges (the part that looks like a funnel and touches your breast), 4 white valves, and 2 silicone diaphrams.
NOTE: If you are going to be pumping and leaving milk at a sitters or daycare, I suggest you purchase another Cool-n Carry bag (the one with the milf bottles & ice packs - I think they are about $15.00). This way, you can give one pack to the sitter with milk and take the empty to work to fill there when you pump.
PROS:
(1) This pump is comfortable. I did have to lubricate my nipples before pumping, but to be far, I had to do that before nursing as well. The only time I had any pain with this pump was when I had a horrible case of thrush. (I had to do two rounds of prescription pills and go through 2 tubes of prescription cream - so it was really bad. Of course, when you are so sore from that, no pump even on the softest setting will be painless.
(2) It has an adjustable suction and speed settings. I found that turning the speed to full speed and carefully turning up to the suction until it was comfortable was the best way to get my milk flowing. Once my let-down was stimulated, I would then turn the speed setting to about half way and continue there until I was finished pumping.
(3) This pump is truly portable! I bought the additional power pack that runs off your car's battery and it is a lifesaver! I pumped many times in the back seat of our SUV while my husband was driving us to a holiday party or a get together. (I think this accessory is about $12.99-$19.99, depending on where you buy it.) You can run this pump on 6 AA batteries, but it tends to use the batteries very quickly and I found the suction wasn't quite as strong. There was enough suction to get the job done, but it always took longer.
(4) While I wished I had purchased the backpack version, I still like the carry all. No one has any idea that it is a breast pump. I took a cross counrty flight and just tucked my wallet, chap-stick, etc. into this bag with all my pump stuff and everyone just assumed it was a black microfiber purse. My husband and I went away for the first time when my baby was 4 weeks old to an overnight stay at a river boat casino and HE even carried the pump bag! That shows you how stylish, yet subtle the bag is. There are 2 exterior pockets, and one huge main interior pocket. There is a clear plastic spot for a picture of your baby, but mine ripped off. There is also a slash-style pocket on the back of the bag that was perfect for hold a burb cloth and clean nursing pads.
(5) The durablitiy of this pump is fantastic! When my 2nd was born, my son was only 18 months and he was quite fascinated with my pump. Several times I looked over to see him playing with it or even take off running with it. Eventually, it was dropped several times, but still keep on going like a champ!
(6) Cleaning is a breeze! The horns go right into the dishwasher. The white valves and silicone cylinders I hand washed, as the directions stated, then tossed them into my Avent Microwave Steam Sterilizer. The tubes and pump itself never need any cleaning. If you will be pumping a lot, I recommend buying extra horns, white vales, and silicone cylinders. I had at least six pairs of each and would just wash them all and sterilize them before I went to bed so they were all ready the next morning. You do have to be a little careful with the white vales. They can tear, but they are cheap to replace. It's a good idea to always have at least 2 extras on hand.
CONS:
I can honestly say with this pump there are no cons. I was very pleased. I have tried the Avent Isis (my favorite hand pump), the Medela Manual - couldn't get a drop out with that, Bailey's Nurture III- worked, but not nearly efficient as my Ameda, harder to work, and sometimes bruised my nipples, and an Evenflo Press-n-Pump - don't bother with this one. Of all these pumps, the Ameda Purely Yours is my favorite. People have complained about it being noisey, but I didn't think it was too bad. Besides, it is an electrical appliance, you can't really expect it to be silent. I have pumped many times beside my sleeping infant or husband and neither were disturbed.
Overall, I think anyone would be happy with this pump. It's gentle, portable, stylish, and is able of producing a lot of milk. (I averaged around 50 oz.s a day with this pump.)
