Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump: Everything the other breast pump is, and more

Pros Carry All keeps things discreet, lightweight, easy to use/clean, relatively inexpensive
Cons Could be quieter
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend this pump to every mother or future mother out there: if only my voice were that big.
I started shopping for a breast pump when I was only 6 months pregnant. I knew I was going to have to work full-time after the baby was born and frankly, wanted to get the expense out of the way.

The only pump I had ever really heard about was the Madela Pump-In-Style. I looked everywhere for a decent price but couldn't bring myself to buy a used breast pump (sorry, that just gives me the heebies). I had even contacted my insurance company to see if perhaps they'd help foot the bill, with no luck might I add. Finally, I came to the realization that I was going to have to shell out nearly $300 for a breast pump... I had even talked to my husband about it and convinced him it was the best thing for our future baby.

There IS another option...
I actually had the PIS in my shopping cart at a site and was ready to Check Out when I saw the following statement: "LOOK! Before you buy the Madela Pump-In-Style see the Ameda Purely Yours line of automated breast pumps. The ONLY FDA approved breast pump on the market today! Better features, lower price!" They definitely caught my attention. I clicked on the link and read about the Ameda Purely Yours and the options available, I even called my hospital to speak with a lactation consultant about it. Everything I was able to find out about this pump made it out to be just as good, if not better, than the PIS (not to mention nearly half the price).

Pros: the unabridged version
As I mentioned, I work full-time. I have to carry my pump with me to work and back home every day. I also use public transportation. The Ameda Purely Yours with Carry All addresses every concern I had:

* The carry all itself is very discreet; no one knows that it isn't just a regular shoulder bag. It is fully self contained in that I am able to store the entire pumping system as well as the Cool 'n Carry Tote (included in the purchase) which stores my expressed milk until I get home. Additionally, I actually have room to store my keys and personal effects as well, so I'm not carrying this in addition to my purse, I'm carrying it instead of my purse.

* Since the motor is run with a microchip, the pump is extremely light weight and not a burden to transport.

* The pump is extremely easy to use. I, however, do not pump in dual mode... I choose to pump one breast at a time because I'm clumsy.

* It is SO easy to clean! The way this pump works, the milk doesn't have to travel through any tubes (which in and of itself is a fabulous feature because this eliminates milk backup into any tubes), it is deposited directly into storage bottles; this is actually how they were able to get FDA approved. Anyway, as a result, there are very few parts that have to be cleaned after a pumping session; the flange itself and a little valve... that's it!

* Personally, I'm a very frugal person. The idea of spending $150 on a breast pump makes my head spin. Relatively speaking, however, the Ameda Purely Yours with Carry All is a great deal when you look at the price of the competition. Plus, we're talking $150 for a new, in the box, unopened product.

* One of the best things about this pump, however, is that all the pieces are available separately. For example, my husband dropped one of my little valves down the disposal and then turned ON the disposal, thus ruining the valve. Several extras were sent with the pump, but I went ahead and ordered more just in case. I also ordered an extra Cool 'n Carry Tote... one to keep with me, one to send to day care with my daughter.

Cons: the unabridged version
It's a little bit noisy. I don't even like to phrase it that way, because it isn't that it's "noisy" per se, it's just that I wish it were a little quieter.

Honestly, that's the only thing I could think of to put under "cons."

To sum it all up...
I use this pump 4 times a day, 5 days a week and I could not possibly be happier with my purchase. If I cannot feed her straight from the source, the Ameda Purely Yours allows me to supply the next best thing at a fraction of the cost of the competition.
