A Truly Excellent Pump for the Working Mother

Pros Efficient, Fast, Comfortable, Portable, Light, Discreet and Relatively Cheap
Cons A little Loud
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I highly recommend it. It's an efficient and comfortable pump that's easy to use and doesn't break the bank.
When I first started looking at pumps, I did my research and knew I should buy an electric pump as opposed to the hand pump, since I planned on working full-time, and hand pumps usually take a long time to empty the breast. The electric pump mostly recommended is the Medela Pump-in Style but at $250-$300 it carries a hefty price tag. Luckily, I was reading the Baby Bargains book at the time and found out about the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump.

THE PRODUCT

The Ameda Purely Yours is a small portable electric pump. It is available in different versions - with no tote, with a carry all or with a backpack. As you can tell the main difference between the versions is the different (or lack of) carrying cases and different accessories. For example the version with the backpack comes with a car adapter whereas the version with the carry all comes without the adapter (of course the price reflects this as the backpack version is more expensive).

The Carry-All Version Specs
This includes:

(1) The Purely Yours Breast Pump - This is a small plastic rectangular box which houses the motor. It weighs only 1 lb. It has the following features:

Two controls - cycle speed and suction speed. The pump has 4 adjustable cycle speeds and 8 suction speeds. This allows you to control the comfort and speed of milk expression.
Battery compartment - This is at the base of the unit and uses 6 AA batteries.
AC Connection.
Hygienikit Connection - This is where the tubing connects to the motor.
Space for the milk collection bottles.

(2) The Hygienikit Milk Collection System. This consists of:

Two Flanges
Two silicone diaphragms
Six plastic valves (You only use two at a time. The others are extra)
Two pieces of tubing

(3) The AC Power adapter

(4) The Cool 'n Carry Tote. This consists of three cooling elements and six 4-ounce bottles with tops.

(5) The Carry All. This is a nice discreet carry all in black and can easily fit all the above things in it and more!

COST

Ebay: $150 and up (incl S&H) (New)
Kaiser Permanente: $150 ($130 w/o tote)
Retail: $200-$250

MY EXPERIENCE

As I mentioned before I had to choose between the Medela and this one. I decided to go with this based purely on the fact that it was lighter, you could use batteries or a car adapter and it was cheaper (I bought it for $150 on ebay).

And then I thought I'd made a terrible mistake. Initially it pumped well and then went downhill! I was confused and then figured out that the white valves needed changing. I did so and a week later ran into the same problem. I ended up changing 3 sets of valves in one month before I realized the problem was me....I hadn't read the instructions. I was cleaning the valves with a brush which is a NONO!! Since, I finally figured that out, the pump works great. I have only changed one set of valves in 3 months (the valves are the part you will have to replace most often, but a pair of valves cost $4).

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT

(1) I can empty both breasts in about 20 mins. It has single as well as dual pumping actions so I can use both or either when needed and both work great.

(2) The variable suction and cycle speeds are great. Initially my nipples were sore and I used a lower suction/cycle speed. Over the last few months, I have slowly increased the speeds to a comfortable level with fast expression.

(3) It's very easy to clean especially since the milk never enters the tubing or the machine! It only passes from the flanges to the valves and then bottles. It is also dishwasher safe.

(4) The Cool 'n Carry Tote is wonderful since it allows me to pump at work and keep the milk cold without having to put bottles of milk in the common fridge!! Discreet.

(5) It's easy to carry around and the carry all is elegant and discreet (especially now that I am working). It is also very light!!

(6) Replacement parts are available for every part of the pump (except the machine). You can get a complete replacement Hygienikit for $30. Even larger and smaller size flanges are available for bigger and smaller women.

(7) The tote has a front and two side pockets. It's very useful for travel mugs, keys etc.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT IT

It's somewhat loud and the noise is a little obnoxious, but you get used to it. It really bothers my husband (especially if I pump at night next to the bedside). I have found that putting the base under a pillow muffles the sound very nicely.

SUMMARY

This is a phenomenal pump. It's light, discreet, fast, and comfortable. And it does all this without breaking the bank. I am so glad I bought this over the Medela and plan on using it for my next child also. I highly recommend this pump. Just don't make the stupid mistakes I did.
