Amazon Kindle 3G Wi- Fi: Is This the End of Traditional Book Reading?

Pros Easy viewing screen; Thousands of free books; Long battery life; Ability to highlight text.
Cons Black and white viewing only; No built- in light.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a very handy e-Book reading and game playing device from Amazon.com
I read a lot of books. Most of the books I read in a given year are supplied to me free of charge by authors, publishers, and other promoters, in exchange for a review. I have a large collection of books and I would read even more if time permitted. But books and the storing of books use up valuable space and in today’s high- tech world, there is a way to read books without having to borrow or own a physical copy. The solution is an eBook reader and the one that presently occupies the nightstand next to my bed is the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader. Let’s take a closer look at this electronic device:

Amazon Kindle Facts and Figures:

The Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is a portable device designed to be held in the hand for the purpose of reading books, newspapers, magazines, and for playing games. The Amazon Kindle measures about 7.5 inches in height, 4.8 inches in width, and 0.34 inches in thickness. The viewing screen measures 6 inches diagonally- large enough for easy reading of the text and large enough for easy viewing of games.  And the beneath the screen one will find a full QWERTY keyboard along with buttons for powering on/off and a multi- function button.

Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader utilizes E Ink display, which produces a high contrast black ink on white background image, just like that of an actual book. This Amazon Kindle offers 4 GB of storage space on the device, which is enough to store 3,500 books. Users can connect to the Wi-Fi wherever they like and purchase of this device includes free Wi- Fi access to AT&T hotspots across the country.

To get started with the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader, users need to first charge the battery. Once charged and ready to go, users can access millions of books and download them directly to the Kindle. Some cost money, but thousands are offered free of charge. Even those that cost money to download can be briefly accessed as samples, free of charge. And the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader offers the ability to highlight a key piece of text and send it directly to Facebook or Twitter.

The Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is physically light, with a total weight of about one- half pound, making it lighter than many actual books. The pages of a book are turned by simply pushing the forward or backward buttons located on either side of the device.

Final Thoughts:

Amazon has made quite a name for itself as a pioneering business for book sales and it continues its quest to expand and improve its product offerings on a daily basis. The creation of the Amazon Kindle is the latest and greatest and it has already won over millions of fans, including many who would otherwise have never considered reading anything besides an actual paperback or hardcover book.

I still like reading books the old- fashioned way, but I can fully respect the benefits of a device like an Amazon Kindle and I understand more clearly why so many people have turned to the Kindle for their reading pleasure. In my household, it was not I but actually my wife who wanted the Amazon Kindle and convinced me to buy her one this past spring.  The Amazon Kindle Fire was not yet available and since we were new to the whole “Kindle” concept, it made sense not to go for the top- of- the- line model yet anyway. There are less expensive Amazon Kindle products, but we opted for the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader. It seemed like the right one for us because it offered the ability to read books, download games, and access Wi- Fi. I made the purchase and we were well on our way to becoming an e-book household.

Taking a look at the functionality of the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader, this device certainly has the important bases covered. Holding it in your hands, it feels like a book, albeit a rather flat one, and it is very lightweight. You may feel some fatigue if you hold this Amazon Kindle for a long period, but it would be no different from the fatigue felt from holding an actual book. The screen is very easy to read and, surprisingly, doesn’t utilize any actual lighting. At first, I found myself looking for the light source, similar to the technology that makes a cell phone screen viewable. But there is no such light source on the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader. The E Ink display technology presents a high level of contrast between the black ink and white background. The contrast is so high and the words to easy to read, you will swear there must be at least some lighting behind this, but it is strictly the E Ink technology at work. And there is absolutely no glare- a refreshing change from other electronic devices, like cell phones, which can often not be read at all in bright sunlight. The screen remains clean with little effort, too. Nothing seems to stick to this screen and it doesn’t smudge, in sharp contrast (once again) to many other electronic devices.

With such an easy to read screen, people will have no trouble deciphering words as they read their favorite books but if some problems do arise, there are solutions. One is with the font. As many are aware, the vision of some individuals requires a larger than average font size. In the old days, that meant having to purchase a large font book, but the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader has you covered. With the available options, font sizes can be increased or decreased, for more comfortable reading. Those who prefer to read in landscape orientation have that option available as well. The people who designed the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader wanted to make sure that the reading experience was trouble- free, and they went out of their way to make this a reality.  You can even highlight text and leave notes- a great feature for students and others who need to refer back to specific text once they finish reading.

One other positive aspect of the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is one that most everyone notices: The long battery life. We have all experienced the frustration of having our cell phone or other device lose its charge, but this problem isn’t likely to happen with this eBook. Its battery is good for about two months (!) of use so it is always ready when you are. Another cool fact about powering/charging the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is that many other cords are compatible. For instance, I have found that the charging cord for my LG cell phone is compatible with this device- and that includes not just my home cell phone cord but also my car cord. They both work with the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader, so I always have an available power supply when I need it.

The Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader includes access to millions of books and it is safe to say that no one who owns this device will ever run out of potential books to read. Amazon Kindle comes with access to thousands of free books and while many of these books are older and a little outdated, they are still free and are nice to have available when trying to pass the time. For a price, there are thousands and thousands of other books available and they vary from a few dollars all the way to $20 and beyond. I have noticed, with the paid books, that one needs to be careful. In some instances, the Kindle version of a book may actually cost more than the hardcover version. Unless you really love reading e-Books, a price situation like this makes a hardcover book the better option financially. I have also noticed that shopping for free books on the Kindle is a little cumbersome. It takes a little more effort to find them, as opposed to the very easy location of the books offered for a fee.  Once you find the book you want, you can read it, save it, and even loan it out to another Kindle reader if you like.

One other fun aspect of the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is the ability to play games. My little girls like this feature- they like being able to turn the screen into their own game board and I have found that I use this device more for game- playing than for reading books. When there is time to spare and we find ourselves waiting around (for example, in a restaurant waiting for a table or waiting to be served), we will often pull out the Amazon Kindle and play a quick game. There are multiple game options available and like with the reading of books, the screen is very clear and easy to see.

The Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is a very nice device with many good things to offer, but it is the perfect way to absorb literary knowledge? Well, not exactly. The more I have used this device, the more its small flaws have become noticeable. First, there is no built- in light. I said before that the screen is very easy to read and I stick with that conviction. But in complete darkness, you need something to help you read the screen. Many people purchase a clip- on light and use that, but it would have been nice if one was included. It would also be nice if the screen was in color. This doesn’t matter for the bulk of books, since most of them are nothing more than black and white words and pages. But it would make a difference with kids books and the added visual appeal would certainly make young kids more likely to read.

Overall, the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader is a very good e-Book reading device with many things just waiting to be shared. Consumers can read books, subscribe to magazines or newspapers, and play games on this device, which can be taken and utilized just about anyplace. It doesn’t have a color screen and the technology is slowly outdating itself as evidenced by the new Amazon Kindle Fire. But this is still a very good e-Book reader and one I do not regret purchasing. I still tend to stick with actual, physical books for my reading pleasure, but I am slowly moving in an e-Book direction and I have the Amazon Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G Wi- Fi eBook Reader to thank for my growing interest.
