So Far So Good

Pros 1) Tall Tub 2) Silverware door holder 3) Cleaning 4) Easy to use controls
Cons 1) No fold down tines. 2) Takes a while to wash.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  As I said so far so good, this dishwasher is meeting all my expectations.
The last 6 months or so my old Maytag (mdb5130) dishwasher was having a problem with it's control panel, I priced the part out and when adding the service fee it didn't make much sense to fix it so I decided to go looking for a new Dishwasher. I got out the trusted consumer magazine and read their reviews and recommendations. My criteria was:
1) Tall Tub
2) Get one with similar or added features compared to my old unit.
3) Wanted it in black
4) Wouldn't break the bank

So my local dealer had a pretty good deal on an Amana ADB2500AWB unit and it fit into my kitchen (more on this later). I purchased the unit and had it professionally installed. So for purposes of this review I am comparing it to my old Maytag (mdb5130) and also expectations of what a dishwasher should do. For the remainder of the review you me see me using DW in places instead of typing out dishwasher.

The Amana adb2500 I purchased was in black which to me appears very nice and fits in with my other appliances. I would not say the external appearance is cutting edge or futuristic but sometimes in the long run those hold up best in the appearance category.

The DW has these washing modes: Quick Wash, Normal wash, Heavy Wash, Auto wash, and Rinse only.
Other wash/control features: a sanitize mode, wash delay of 2,4,6 hour, control lockout, heated dry, and hi temp wash.

The washing performance so far is as good but probably better than my old DW. The reason I probably better is that I must admit something - I used to rinse/scrape my dishes thoroughly before loading my OLD DW so they were practically clean when loaded. The new DW I'm just scraping off the larger food particles and sometimes soaking the dishes before loading. I have washed glasses, cups, plates, bowls, cake pans, silverware and utensils all have come out clean. I did have one plate that had dry caramel/chocolate that had a couple very small spots left on which came off quick with hand washing and by small I mean barely able to be seen. For detergent I am using Electrasol and Cascade w/gel tabs.

The time for the wash wash cycles isn't short but seems on par with my old Maytag DW. It does seem longer than the 1970s Kitchenaid DW I had before the Maytag but from research that's the price of better energy efficiency. I have read a few reviews where people replace a much older DW and are disappointed in the longer wash times, but never take into account the new designs and energy savings cause the machine to run longer.

Loading the nylon coated racks isn't rocket science and the racks have a variety of holding patterns compared to my old DW. The upper and lower racks on one side also feature fold down shelves/holders for cups and long utensils. The silverware/utensil holders on the door are great and make it even easier to fit more items in. FYI it seems eopinions claims the racks are height adjustable, mine are not and I see no dealer that claims that feature for this model either.

Drying performance seems as good if not better than my old DW, some cups that have indentations on their bottoms have a little water in the indentation but I just pull the cup out, hold it over the sink and turn it right side up and the water is gone. I also have seen reviews where people who replace much older (fan assisted) dishwashers are disappointed with the drying performance of their new unit, please note that proper loading of items helps immensely. The manual has examples of proper loading.

Now for a negative - The new racks are very nice but I would of liked the addition of fold down tines in some areas for even more loading flexibility.

I should say that at first I selected a Whirlpool DW but due to size constraints of my cabinet opening it wasn't a good choice. The Amana is a bit smaller outside but still has similar internal capacity to the Whirlpool and fit in just right.

Note - I posted this review accidentally under an older model number, I am now correcting this mistake by posting it under the correct one. The correct one is ADB2500AW.
