The Bottom Line:  Have you seen Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel?  Hold on to the memories with the soundtrack.
A Bit of History

Alvin and the Chipmunks are one of the most awarded musical groups in recording history having received five Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, Golden Reel Award, two Kid's Choice awards and Emmy nominations.  And to think,...they are the creation of Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958.  The three singing Chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore were voiced by Bagdasarian and then sped up for the recordings.  They were named after the 3 executives of the original recording company.  After Bagdasarian's death, his son and name sake took over and continued the fun along with Janice Karman.

2007 and 2009 Movies

The two movies produced were smash hits.  The actors doing voice over work were Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Jesse McCartney.  The music voices for both the Chipmunks and the Chipettes belong to Bagdasarian, Jr. and Karman.

Through the years there have been numerous television productions based on the Chipmunks relationship with David Seville (Bagdasarian, Sr.'s stage name), and several albums have been produced.  Now comes Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.  The album mix is delightful and is a great reminder of scenes in the movie.   The recordings are excellently done and are a wonderful way to relax with a smile on your face.  So sit back... Allllvvvviiinnn!  Where's my CD?  Simon, where is Alvin?  Theodore?  Oh, Dave, they've got to a Hollywood Premier.

Here they are, boys and girls.  Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Chipettes.

Songs and Writers

So I've never reviewed an album by a group that actually doesn't exist, so here is a listing of the songs and some reactions to the creativity.  Of course, it also includes a tribute to the writers.

>You Really Got Me< Written by Ray Davies.  The electrophonic sound of this selection is a great start to the collection.  The harmonies are well mixed.  This song is a duet with The Honor Society band and is a solid rocker song.

>Hot N Cold< Written by Katy Perry, Lukasz Gottwald, and Max Martin.  The Chipettes have a very similar sound (only more feminine) as the Chipmunks.  There is lots of synthetic instrumentation in the track and it shows here more than in most.

>So What< Alecia B Moore, Johann Karl Schuster and Max Martin.  I really like how this starts with a piano rip that opens to sassy lyrics from the Chipettes.  If you listen closely to the lyrics you can about tell the story line in the movie.

>You Spin Me Round Like A Record< Peter Burns, Stephen Coy, Mike Percy and Timothy Lever.  This is one of those songs that once you get it in your head, you will not be able to shake it.  Alvin and the boys do a great job.  Mixing on the recording is well done with echo effects mixed in during the chorus.

>Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)< Beyonce Knowles, Terius Nash, Thaddis Harrell and Christopher Stewart.  It is quite a bold move to put such a popular Beyonce song on the album.  But the Chipettes perform this so well and it is just adorable with the choreography in the movie.

>Bring It On< Ali Dee Theodore and Jason Gleed.  The pumping guitar intro leads into a very hard driving song with an a bit overwhelming drum thump.  This song will amaze you at the expert manner in which the voices are done and then put on record.

>Stayin' Alive< Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb.  When I saw this song in the movie I thought they were crazy for trying to recapture the magic of that Bee Gees song.  But Alvin and the gang did it with a gusto that is superb.  This cover is just as fun as the original.

>The Song< Ali Dee Theodore, Alana Da Fonseca, Mike Klein and John McCurry.  This song is performed by The Chipettes featuring Queensberry.  This song has a great deal of spunk to it.  You think I'm crazy, baby is the refrain.  The lyrics speak to what happens to all of us who love music.  Inside my brain there's a song.

>It's OK< Ali Dee Theodore, Alana Da Fonseca and Vinny Alfieri.  This fast paced song has a lot of echo effect and is performed by The Chipmunks.  It is really hard to tell what they are saying in some points of this song.

>Shake Your Groove Thing< Dino Fekaris and Frederick Perren.  This soul song is expertly performed in this cover of the classic Peaches and Herb song.   Oh and those Chipmunks can shake their Chipmunk grove things along with the Chipettes.

>Put Your Records On< Corrine Bailey Rae, John Beck and Steven Chrisanthou.  Performed by The Chipettes, the cover of the Rae song is actually one of the most beautiful songs on the collection.  With its slow pace and emotionally charged lyrical performance, this song is a great love song.

>I Want To Know What Love Is< Mick Jones.  Foreigner perhaps did a better job on the vocal presentation, but The Chipmunks don't trail behind by much.  The performance features great instrumentation including an electric organ.

>We Are Family< Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers.  I definitely remember this point in the movie when The Chipmunks and Chipettes were both on the stage at the school performance.  This song has a great high energy.  Watch out Sly and the Family Stone.

>No One< Alicia Keys, Kerry Brothers, Jr. and George Michael Harry.  Charise, the Pilipino singing star joins The Chipettes on this number featuring strong instrumentation including the classic Alicia Keys piano sounds.  This is an excellent performance.

>I Gotta Feeling< William Adams, Jaime Gomez, Allan Pineda, Stacy Ferguson, David Guetta and Frederic Riesterer.  The Chipmunks and the Chipettes are together on this cover of The Black Eyed Peas' hit.  The song is a great deal of fun and very true to the originals including the pauses.

Final Thoughts

The Chipmunks are a tradition dating through the entirety of my life.  Their playful fun is exhilarating to those who view them on either the small or large screen.  The play The Squeakquel in the house is to relive that wonderful evening when I went to see the movie.  Every scene comes alive.  And children love the strange sounds of their musical delivery.  This is one of those must have collections that will bring enjoyment for years to come.  More than 50 years proves The Chipmunks are here to stay.
