The Bottom Line:
The best portable speaker system out there. Do not hesitate, crushes any competition out there.
The Altec Lansing IM600 are truly one of the best portable speakers available. Your most important feature must be sound quality, which definitely doesn't disappoint. Altec lives up to its name, and the speakers have incredible trebles and mid's, as well as satisfying lows. For bass lovers, the quality is quite good for portable speakers, and in fact, I don't think you can get better quality from any other portable speakers out there.
All genres of music sound nice, especially rock and pop. The SFX option allows the sound to be spread out more. Personally, I keep it on all the time. The main reason I bought this product was to allow me to take my music anywhere I want, because I prefer sound through speakers rather through headphones. Another thing most people would worry about is how loud it can play. In a regular bedroom, you would not need to set the volume more than 50%, and I like to listen to music loud. For a bigger room, like a living room, you can get good volume at close to maximum, with very little distortion. It even sounds pretty good outside if your in the 50 ft range.
The speakers have a built in ipod dock for all ipods which allows you to control track and volume with the included remote. It also has an FM transmitter, so you can listen to radio stations, as well as an auxiliary input, (3.5mm) for mp3 players and other sound sources. There is also a subwoofer plug-in, but altec lansing doesn't sell the stand alone subwoofer anymore to compliment the speakers. You can, however, plug a 3.5mm cable into a stereo receiver and only use the sub from the sound system, but there really isn't any purpose, the bass is fine by itself with the speakers. The remote has good range, used it fine in my bedroom and living room from close to 30 ft away. The Battery lasts about 5-6 hours, and you have a battery meter on the display. It comes with a charger, 3 ipod adapters than snap into the dock for your particular ipod, and integrates with your ipod's alarm clock. The speakers have 2 track/tuning buttons, a play/pause button, SFX button, input button (choose between ipod, FM, or aux) and a power button. The speakers fold very nicely, and with a touch of a button flip out to expose the front dock and back inputs. The remote also has a slot in the back for storage. I bought this for $125 from amazon, one of the best portable speakers I have ever heard. Do not get the logitech speakers that rival the im600's (I think they are called the Logitech Anywhere) because they don't sound nearly as good as these. You will not be disappointed, a very good buy on my part, and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs portable speakers. It is very hard to find good sounding, loud, portable speakers with good bass.
