My Remanufactured ACS-495's
Pros
Sound quality, Reliability, Style, Functionality, Simplicity
Cons
expinsive, hard to find
Recommended it?
Yes
Im a BIG gamer and an avid (perhaps OVERLY avid i have 12,000 songs) collector of mp3's. I also just bought a Sony DVD player and MAN!! do DVD sound and look great.
That being said, I'm pretty picky when it comes to what i use as computer audio. My parents gave me a gift 2 years ago consisting of a set of logitech speakers. These things were total crap, the plastic woofer buzzed and the entire thing would beep loudly on occasion. All my friends kept telling me to get altec lansings, and i never listened until 4 months ago.
At that point I had decided to build myself a new computer, no matter the cost. Using pricewatch.com and ubid.com i shopped around for every single item in this beige box. When it came time to get speakers i checked out altecs site and discoverd i could be quite happy in life just testing out there product line. Then i checked prices on both sites and came across an auction for remanufactured ACS-495's. Now these speakers are made exclusivly to Dell, so to get ahold of them like i did is rare, and there is a reason Dell sells this model. This is the BEST set of speakers i can imagine that doesnt include 2 extra speaker.
The set consists of a woooden woofer box that can fill any room with bass without even being pushed half to the max (the base on this thing is better than the 12" pushers i used to have in my car!!!).
And a pair of satalites, one of which has the volume control for the set on it.
To adjust the volume of the unit you simply turn a small knob, to adjust the bass you press a button and then use that same knob then hit the button again when done to go back to volume. You adjust all features the same way.
The 495's have USB sound built in, and i personally LIKE it a lot, some people on the other hand believe it is bad to tax the CPU for sound when you can just use a sound card (most of those people being gamers). Also the set supports a kind of SudoSurround sound (were the speakers trick your ears into believing there are 4 speakers using only 2), and of course they support digital signals.
I payed 80$ for my set and feel that i could not have gotten a better deal unless they had been given to me free.
So if you can find this model at auction or in some other way and its priced UNDER 300$(its retail price) !!BUY IT!!
