Earthshaking

Pros High quality, full sound, attractive housing
Cons Quirky power-up feature
Recommended it? Yes
I'm a glutton for good sound.

I bought these speakers because the factory set that came with my system just weren't cutting it, especially after downloading Napster and turning my machine into a virtual jukebox. After testing out several speakers at my local Circuit City merchandise display rack, I settled on the Altec ACS45.2, for they combine full, encompassing sound with a warm bass that has minimal vibration.

Many epinions on these speakers criticize their lack of "true" bass and mediocre sound. The 45.2's were not designed to play club-quality, eardrum-bursting sound. They are computer speakers designed to project high-quality sound in a small, indoor location, most likely near a computer. Because of this, not only are the tweeters shielded, they are also tweaked electronically to minimize interference with magnetic media. The subwoofer is not shielded, so it must be placed a safe distance away from your computer. It IS, however, a directionless subwoofer, which means that, unlike older models, you do not need to position it in a corner.

One thing that always bothers me about speaker systems is the lack of cord length. Altec has made up for this by providing sufficiently long cords to connect speaker to speaker, speaker to subwoofer, and subwoofer to computer, allowing you to position them up any way you please.

A quirk that I have with these speakers is the fact that there is no power-up switch. Instead, to turn the system on, you press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons simultaneously. Again, very minor complaint.

All-in-all, the quality of sound is very good, and Altec knew what they were doing when they created this sound system. It is a good buy at $80: you are getting an upper-middle class sound system, not the best money can buy, but the best for the every-day computer user.
