Alpine CDA-7863 - great value
Pros
Great sound, very clear, the BBE is a great addition.
Cons
NO EQ!!! Skips somewhat easily.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
It was a great product when it came out, but with all the new technology with MP3 players and such, get a newer Alpine.
This has been my head unit for 2 years now and i can say there are only 2 downsides to it. No EQ and it skips pretty easily. Since I have a Kenwood 9 band EQ the first con is somewhat a mute point. But the skipping can get annoying. It doesn't skip because of scratched discs very easily but you hit a bump and it'll skip.
As far as the overall quality of the CDA-7863, its great! I love the sound my system gets with this unit. By far the coolest feature is the built in Barcus Berry Sonic Maximizer. It has 3 levels and really does improve the sound of the whole system. With the stock speakers it sounded best on 3, the highest setting, but when I upgraded to all Boston Acoustic ProSeries speakers it sounded best on 1. When it was on 3 with the far superior Boston speakers, it sounded a little artificial. The menus on the unit are very in depth and allow for a ton of customization with how the unit functions. I don't see this as a con, but some of my peers do because they don't want to spend the time making it to their liking.
