In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream

Alien (1979)

This is the movie that made a star of Sigourney Weaver and became the prototype for all sci-fi horror movies to come.

By Director Ridley Scott, who is probably the finest director working today, Alien is the story of... Read full review »

The Radiance of Terror

Pros Sinister, visually repulsive at the same time being gorgeous.
Cons Diapers not included.
Recommended it? Yes

Alien is undoubtedly one of the best scary movies ever made. I think what makes it such a good film though, is how classy it is. It's not in your face and loud, it's quiet and subtle. Not to mention it's bizarrely ugly, while at the same time being beautiful.

The film was directed by... Read full review »

Why Did I Watch This Film? (Feel Free To Skip to Next Paragraph)

I had mentioned to my husband that I had been in the mood lately to re-watch some films that I had watched years before such as War of the Roses and When Harry Met Sally. We started talking about old films and then got on... Read full review »

Pros It's just scary.
Cons It ends.

OK, so tell me with a straight face that you can watch Alien in a dark silent room and it's not scary? Well, I think you?re lying.

Look, it's simple: You're in this giant, cold, wet, drippy, metal and steel maze (that literally has no escape) and there's this giant killer monster out... Read full review »

"All other priorities rescinded...."

Pros Two versions of the 1979 sci-fi chiller. What more do you want?
Cons Some of the "making of" material is disjointed.

Although the series it spawned became more of an action-adventure quadrilogy (let's ignore, shall we, the ill-considered and poorly executed Alien vs. Predator), 1979's sci fi-chiller Alien is a classic that straddles two different genres (horror and futuristic space fiction) and scared the... Pros Acting. Cast. Directing. Horror qualities. Setting. Special effects.

It may seem unlikely that the most effective horror movie I have ever seen is set aboard a space ship, but Alien, released in 1979, continues to be one of the most frightening I have come across. Perhaps it's the setting - far from the safety of earth. Or perhaps because the victims face a death so... Read full review »

Released in 1979, Alien plays like the dark side of George Lucas' Star Wars and Stanley Kubrick's 2001. The film opens with a giant, blackened ship named the Nostromo that is returning a crew of seven to Earth. Why these people have been away from Earth remains a mystery that isn't really... I've had all sorts of rumblings and churning in my chest and belly today. I'd be willing to pass it off as the heavily-loaded pizza and buffalo wings I ate last night except for the fact that I decided to watch the 1979 classic horror film Alien on DVD before turning into bed last night, and my cat... Alien: Simple movies are good

byyakkowarner Mar 5, 2009

Pros   Perfectly scripted sci-fi/horror film, has stood the test of time
Cons   Parts look dated, no modern special effects.
Recommended it? Yes

This is the movie that started the quadrology off as well the Predator vs. Alien movies. Its introduction to this species in this movie is pretty basic and does not get into the details of the Alien culture that you find in the second movie. But if you have not seen any of these movies then you do... Read full review »

Alien Academy Awards Collection; 20th Anniversary Edition DVD

Director Ridley Scott's breakthough film an immensely successful blend of horror and science fiction is a classic in both genres and spawned a host of sequels and imitators. Starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley ALIEN focuses on the crew of the space cargo ship Nostromo which lands on a moribund planet in response to a faint SOS. Inside a crashed ship the crew members come upon strange pods one of which spews forth a repellently fleshy insectile creature that locks on to the face of the unlucky Kane John Hurt. Despite Ripley's advice science officer Ash Ian Holm allows Kane to return to the ship where the creature finally releases its grip. Soon however in one of the film's most infamous scenes one of its offspring explodes horribly from Kane's stomach and scurries away. Dallas Tom Skerritt the vessel's captain leads the others in a search for the rapidly growing acid-dripping alien before it can cut them down--one by one. A triumph of art direction set design and special effects ALIEN gains much of its impact from the contrast between the bleak antiseptic beauty of the space vessel's interior and the primordial horror of the alien a brilliantly original fusion of insect man and machine designed by Swiss surrealist painter H.R. Giger. The top-notch cast also includes Veronica Cartwright Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean Stanton.
