A "Must Have"... AIPTEK IS-DV... perfect for sportsmen

bylghbob Jun 21, 2006
Pros Price, flexibility, and it works!
Cons Not enough to complain about.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If I lost mine today, I'd buy another one tomorrow. For the price, an amazing piece of technology.
I remember well.. hiking in the mountains and trying to save weight... I would have loved this back then...

I've been using the camera for about 3 months.

First... the camera case is great. Velcro, strong belt loop, and easy access... plus tiny tiny. The hand strap makes the camera easy to hang on to and to "steady" for pics.

I use it for video, Mp3, stills, and as a personal recorder.. Onboard memory is too small, but it will take up to a 1GB MB SD card. I use a 512 MB keep about 50 or 60 MP3's and the latest Podcasts on hand. This leaves plenty of space for pics and short videos (can mix). The sound is about as good as you could expect... fine for non critical listening. The earbuds are adequate. If you expect Bose or Ipod quality, it's not for you... but works fine for me.

The interface is about the best I've seen... It's intuitive, and super easy to go directly to what you want to use. More options than my Sony, but really not necessary. I used the AIPTEK for about a week, before I went to the instructions. A single click to turn on , and then right to either camera or video, direct... or a simple toggle switch for tweaks, playback, zoom, sound level etc... Simple to reformat, erase, change flash and LCD brightness and to go to the finer points like "light", speed, and more stuff than you'll need. Oh... it also has a tripod fitting.

The video is is VGA or QVGA which allows for hours of video recording. I playback on my 27" TV with no problem, right from the camera... Not HDTV, but better than I expected.

The digital Zoom works well... smooth when in Video mode. Have heard others complain about LCD view in daylight... three settings... Again... better than my Sony, but in direct sunlight, don't think any viewer would work.

The 5.1 Meg still capacity does produce big pics at the highest level, but the resolution (lens ability)isn't as good as a $500 digital Canon. Works for me, though. Has "red eye"... and self timer built in.

The MP3 player allows you to see titles, and to make selections. Does autoplay.

All cables and stuff for USB, TV Playback, charger, and earphones are included. The included lithium battery lasts for a long time...

Digital Image Stabilizer... Can switch on or off... and amazingly enough... it works. You really need it when using as a handheld (because it's so small), to take away the shakes.

Took me a while to use it as a web cam... I had to finally read the instructions. My dumb.

Bought it at Target on sale for $88 and with the extra 10% that I got for opening an account, it put the cost at under $80.

The best part, is that it goes with me very easily... whether travelling, or biking, or just hanging out. Fits into pocket or on hip... with case. I know that if I drop and break it... I won't shed a tear... $88 is much more affordable than any alternative.

Cons-
...made of plastic.. you can't throw it against the wall, or drop it in the pond and expect it to perform
...don't plan for Professional videos or Stills... but think you'll be surprised at how good the quality is.
...the auto brightness control is a little slow, if you're taking action shots.
...sound is built in... not great for personal recording or video sound, but ok for earbud listening.
