I began playing strategy games with AOE about 2 years ago. Being new to the genre I was a little aprehensious about a "real time" strategy game but I figured I would try it. From that moment forward I was hooked. To not diverge from AOE2 let me tell you what I find desirable about the game and why you should consider buying it:
1) It is flawlessly written - this is to say that the AOE engine makes the game run so sweet that you truly begin to believe you are in the era of empires and kings.
2) It is an amazingly beautiful game - the graphics are top notch and are far superior to the original and the rise of rome expansion. Castles are depicted in painstaking detail, ships glisten in the sun, and units are attractive and realistic.
3) Many more units than the original - you can choose from a variety of races including the Persians (who use elephants) and the Vikings who have a beautiful ship unique to their race. You can create various troops assign them a number for easy recall in battle. Cannoneers are an interesting additional unit (and funny to watch).
4) Women villagers - a new addition ; now you have both male and female villagers who can fight!
5) The game is by Microsoft so it flawlessly integrates into your Windows environment.
6) It is challenging and relaxing - a great stress relief (as opposed to games like Quake 3 which increase my blood pressure).
