Microsoft and Ensemble studios have created an awesome sequel to Age of Empires, called Age of Empires II, The Age of Kings. Age of Empires II maintains the "Civilization" feel that Age of Empires held. However, instead of tanks and futuristic mechs that Civilization uses, AOE 2 has things like catapults, archers, swordsmen, and cavalry units.
Animated mills, smoke billowing out of blacksmith shops, the detail is amazing. Villagers throw nets in the water when fishing, while new perils await them in the woods. Wolves that have the ability to 'smell' the villagers as they near, and wild boards will hunt your villagers down. Sheep can be collected and herded to your base as well as deer hunting for food.
AOE II has greatly improved in-game help over AOE I. Hold your cursor over an item, and the game brings up a full description straight out of the manual. Game sounds are complimented by text messages for players who don't remember what the sounds mean.
AI players are smarter, and will forfeit if they are going to be obliterated. Monks are much smarter and will heal wounded units around them within a wide radius.
Map sizes are much larger and categorized by the number of players, and a much improved map generator is included with the game.
So far, I can't seem to let a day go by without playing this game at least once. It offers GameZone support, so you can play against other AOE 2 addicts. DirectX 6.1 is required, and included with the game, as well as the GameZone software. Note that it also works well with DirectX 7. The detail is greatly improved over Age of Empires I. For all CIV/AOE addicts, I highly recommend this game!
