Milo & Otis: A Live Action Animal Story of a Dog & Cat
Pros
No profanity or violence. Real animals!
Cons
Just beware the scenes of the cat and dog giving birth.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I think it is a cute live action animal flick for little ones. It is a movie about friendship. Just keep in mind they show animals giving birth!
I always wanted to see Milo & Otis. I think I was around 10 or 11 years old when it came out in theaters, back in '89. It was a live action story about a dog (Otis) and cat (Milo). Milo is an orange and white tabby. Otis is a pug. But, alas, my parents never took me to see the movie, nor did they buy it for me. But 18 years LATER they did buy it for my son. Haha! By then my interest waned, but one day when I really did not want to watch Spongebob I popped this in the DVD player. It was a super choice!
OVERVIEW
Milo and Otis are recently born on the barn. Immediately when Milo is born, you already see how his curious nature can and will get him in trouble as he almost tumbles off the hayloft. But, soon after he comes across Otis. He immediately takes to him, crawling all over him and chewing on his ears and tail, and Otis just takes it. While Milo is adventuresome, egocentric and curious. "Deep down inside, we're all cats, right?" - Otis is staid, careful, cautious and responsible.
Eventually Milo's curiosity gets the best of him, and one day he is swept away by the river, far away from his safe home at the barn. Otis, being his best friend, goes off to find and save him. Along the way they meet a bear, fox, owl, pig family, raccoon and sea turtle. Sometimes they give the animals they come across a helping hand, er - paw. Other times the animal helps THEM along their journey. But how will it end? Will they reunite? Will they return to the barn? And will they still be best friends at the end?
The story builds upon their individual personalities with little vignettes. For example, when the chicken needs someone to watch her egg she just laid she asked Otis. While Milo stirs up mischief chasing crabs and crawfish. It also portrays their friendship well. They play hide-and-seek. Otis keeps sniffing Milo out easily. Finally, Milo finds a brilliant hiding spot, and it worked, but Milo wonders if it was really worth the trouble. And they are often cuddling together.
STYLE/DIRECTOR INFO
If there was no narration, you would think you were watching a documentary on farm animals. It is the narration by Dudley Moore (Dudley,Crazy People) that leads you on the journey. Sometimes you get the idea that director Masanori Hata (also directed Lovely Complex) just threw some animals together, taped it and then did some creative editing to make a story. Plus, in the movie Milo and Otis have kittens and puppies. And you actually see their significant others giving birth. Did they actually mate Milo and Otis with these females? I almost believe it since the film did take four years to complete. But, I am sure editing took a big portion too.
Actually, Masanori Hata did create documentaries previously, which could explain the style. Also, this movie originally was called Koneko Monogatari, literal translation is A Kitten's Story. It was then translated from Japanese to English with Dudley Moore narrating. This movie being Japanese could probably explain the reason animals were thrown together like they were - not the same guidelines. I am still amazed that a dog rode a sea turtles back.
ANIMAL ACTION
Like I said, they used REAL animals. And what happens when you put live animals together...trouble! But there is narration to explain all of these scenes.
1. When the chick is hatching from the egg that Milo and Otis are watching, Milo is actually nibbling on it!
2. Milo crawls over to a baby crow/raven on a branch and SMACKS him on the head! "Hey! Your singing stinks! Will you quit it?"
3. Milo is smacking a crab around and it pinches him on the muzzle!
4. Otis pounces on a frog.
5. Milo and a deer fall asleep together, all nuzzled together.
6. Milo nurses from a pig.
7. A dog gives birth to puppies.
8. A cat gives birth to kittens.
9. Otis rides a sea turtle's back.
10. Milo falls off a cliff into the sea
11. Milo plays with a snake.
12. Milo falls off a tree into a hole.
REVENGEFUL RABBITS
In the beginning of the movie, when the kittens are being born, the narrator tells the viewers that some animals just accepted the noise, some where pretty annoyed (show the ducks), and a few quietly plotted revenge (showing the rabbits). I just think it's funny the rabbits were plotting revenge.
NOMINATIONS
In 1987 the film won from the Awards of the Japanese Academy the Popularity Award and was nominated for Best Music Score. In 1990 it was nominated for Best Family Motion Picture - Adventure or Cartoon by the Young Artist Awards.
PARENTS NOTE
I personally have no issue with this - but some parents might. The movie clearly shows a cat and dog giving birth to kittens and puppies. Labor and all. But there is no violence, gore or profanity. How refreshing!
OVERALL
My son loves the animals. He points them out to me, says their name and the corresponding sounds. And it is just nice to see a movie with no violence, foul language, sex, nudity.
