Milo and Otis: Childhood Classics

Pros Very cute and lovable adventure for kids.
Cons Minorly shocking in spots.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A fun loving and warm family flick packed with simple pleasures any child can appreciate.
Let's get this out of the way right now. I was one of those little kids who LOVED this movie. I recently acquired it and watched it again after not seeing the film since the 1980's. Normally, when I see something I loved as a kid, I realize how silly and for-children-only that the story really is. That wasn't the case with this movie. As a 19 year-old, I still see the magic in it that I saw when I was three years old. Sure, there are a few things that I notice now that I didn't think of then, like how Milo magically reverses in age back to a kitten halfway through the movie, but those things don't in any way take away from the magic of the story.

As an older and more practical thinking person than I was before, I was a little um...shocked at a few scenes, particularly the kitty and puppy birth scenes, the box falling down the waterfall, and Milo jumping off a HUGE cliff into the rocky ocean. The last two in particular kind of made me sit back and wonder...did they really do that to those animals? There are just so many things that could have gone wrong that would have resulted in an obituary for dear Milo.

I can't decide if the film would have been better off with multiple narrators instead of just the one. I found it a little too comical to hear Dudley Moore wailing and screaming like a pig with it's hoof stuck, or a mother cat freaking out because her kitten got washed down the river. However, I do think that the one-narrator script reading was effective just for the pure simplicity of the film if nothing else.

I also wondered if a few lines were added to the script afterwards to account for a few things the animals did that were a little too-perfect to leave out. I just can't imagine that you could train a cat to actually step on a chicken like it did, or play hide-and-go-seek with the bear in the chest of drawers.

The great thing about Milo and Otis is that it's timeless. I'd like to believe that children now would love it just as much as I did as a kid. I would definitely recommend it.
