Acer AspireOne XP

Pros footprint, screen quality, exterior quality.
Cons weak wireless, keyboard has a little give to it.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A solid Netbook, the AspireOne will do most basic computing tasks easily.
I bought the tiny Aspire one a few days ago.  I had initially bought an Asus EeePC but was unimpressed and exchanged it for the AspireOne.  This is a review of the 1.6Ghz Intel Atom based system with 120GB hard drive and 1GB RAM equipped with Windows XP

Overall I think the AspireOne is a good sub-notebook.   The unit I bought came with Windows XP which runs quickly and smoothly.  The 8.9" LCD produces high quality images and doesnt suffer too badly from glare.  There is a webcam built in above the display.  The webcam is not very intuitive to get up and running but works well.  The microphone is ok and doesnt pick up too much background noise.

The keyboard is 89% sized and with a little learning curve I have been able to type quickly with minimal errors.  Certain keys such as the backspace key are half sized which can be annoying.  The trackpad is adequately sized however the left and right click buttons are located on either side of the trackpad as opposed to below it as I am used to.  This can be frustrating but again, with a bit of getting used to, it works fine.

The speakers are nothing to write home about.  Located on the underside of the case, they are easily muffled if it is sitting on your lap.  There is a headset port and microphone port which are well placed on the side.

The AspireOne has 3 USB ports, 2 on the right and one on the left.  There is also a port to connect an external monitor and 2 expansion slots for SD cards.  There is also an Ethernet port.

The built in Wireless receiver is not the most powerful and I had trouble connecting to networks that had 2 or less bars of strength.

Battery strength is average.  I got about 2.8 hours from it.  I was mostly streaming video so it kept the system busy.  I would expect better battery life for more mundane tasks.

I found that the AspireOne came with very poor documentation.  The user guide was next to useless and did not explain much beyond initial set up and how to care for the notebook.  Pre-loaded software included Mcafee anti-virus, the Microsoft Works suite of programs as well as a 60 day trial of Microsoft Office 2007.

Overall the AspireOne is a solid sub-notebook or Netbook.  It wasnt designed for high performance computing and as a result it has its limitations but it is more than sufficient for the tasks it was intended to do.  If you need a small notebook for browsing the internet, email, word processing etc than this will be just fine.  If you need more performance, I would suggest spending the extra money and buying a full featured laptop.
