Acerscan 320U: Great scanner BUT....
Pros
Great price, quality, speed. INDISPENSABLE for online auctioners
Cons
ROACHES!!!
Recommended it?
Yes
This scanner was an incredible steal for the $30-after-rebate that I got it for. I scoff at the opinions I have read in PC magazines that characterize the Acerscan 320U as nothing more than a "bargain bin scanner" or "a good buy for the kids", etc.
It can scan at DPI's far higher than I would ever truly want to use, (I have no interest in creating huge, 100+ meg scans) and the reproduction quality is amazing. Even small "photo-booth" sized photos can be scanned and blown up to 8.5x11 sizes with excellent image quality and near-perfect color replication.
Plus if you're scanning simply for web content, as I usually do, the additional benefits provided by a higher-priced scanner would be negligible. Consider that any images to be used for the Web (online photo albums, personal website, Ebay auctions, etc) need to be at a relatively low resolution, or else the images will take ages to actually load. As a result, the 600 DPI supported by this scanner is more than enough for the vast majority of users.
The scanner's speed is also impressive. When you scan something, the scanner will first do a preliminary "quick scan" to provide you with a preview image on the screen. You can then select which portions you would like to scan, and it will only scan those areas, thus saving lots of time when scanning small items (photographs, CD's, etc). Even when scanning large, full-sized items (such as the box for a computer game), the average scan only takes about ten seconds.
I'd say this scanner has likely paid for itself many times over, since I have used it so often for eBay online auctions. Believe me when I say that posting a scan of your item in your online listing can increase the price your item fetches big time. If you do any kind of selling online of items such as books, software, videos, memorabilia, etc, a scanner such as this one is an indispensable investment.
My only complaint? ROACHES!!! Believe it or not, an entire family of roaches has made a home in my scanner. You can see them crawling around right through the glass panel. At least they don't usually affect my scans, unless one is crawling RIGHT on the image sensor, which creates a big streak through the image (re-scanning usually solves the problem).
Of course, the roach problem is a pretty minor cricism for a printer of this quality at such an incredible price. It even comes with a great software bundle that would cost more to buy than the scanner itself! (ULead Photo Express 2.0, Kai Photosoap, image recognition software). In fact, for an overwhelming majority of people out there, I can honestly say that spending more money on a "higher end" scanner would be serious waste of money, providing minimal benefits while potentially spending several times as much.
(Note: if you're having any technical difficulties with this scanner, I suggest getting the newest driver at http://www.acerscan.com/drivers/imaging_drivers.html)
