Efficient, dependable, and great value

Pros Quick start up, good value, comfortable size
Cons none really, could have more USB ports
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Very good value for a machine with a lot of storage, 3G ram, and good sized screen
This Acer laptop is an inexpensive yet dependable unit.  I purchased last October when Windows 7 was introduced and have been very pleased with it.

Initial Set Up
Very quick, efficient.  You do have to put a password in when you set the PC up (make sure you write this information down or you’ll be in trouble!).

In addition, make sure you have a few DVDs so you can make the backups at the beginning.  This will take some time.  This took about an hour for 3 discs to be created.

What it comes with
It comes with Windows 7 (which I enjoy very much, very responsive and reasonably simple to use.)

MS Works – does not have the “real” Word with it but is good in a pinch.  You get a “trial” version of Excel and Word which means after 60 days you have to purchase a serial number.  As I already have the program, I uninstalled what it came with and installed my version.

Wireless access – hooking up is very easy, you click on an icon in lower right corner and can find your connection, either at home or while traveling.

Typical programs such as paint, notepad, etc.

Games come with the program, they are actually rather slow and the graphics are cumbersome on them.  Many of them are “trial” editions which mean they want you to purchase them after using them a few times.  As I’m not much of a game player, I really don’t care.

In addition, you get a trial version of McAfee antivirus.  It also boots up into MSN messenger which I find annoying but I kill that off right away.

The laptop
The touch pad is ok, but I did purchase a wireless mouse so that it’d be easier to work with.  Screen is glossy, good resolution and color.  At 15.6” it is almost the size of many desktop units.

It works reasonably fast, however when ripping/burning music CDs, I think it could be a bit faster.  Keyboard is decent.  What is also nice is that it has a number pad at the right side which is great if you are doing spreadsheets.  It’s a comfortable weight; battery power is about 2 hours.  I make sure to keep it charged when not using it.  However, I’ve been able to use the laptop for decent time intervals (i.e. during power failures/travel).  Images on the screen are good, it has a DVD/CD player/burner which is a very nice feature.

There are only 2 USB ports so you may wish to buy a device to plug and play additional items if necessary.

Software installation is a snap.  About 80% of the time it does read the disk, sometimes you have to go into my computer and find the disk, clicking on the EXE file to get program installed.

I’m not writing about the Windows 7 operating system but if you are somewhat familiar with previous versions (Vista/XP), you’ll figure it out.  One annoying feature is that the windows can go transparent when moving them around.  I’ve worked with Elements 8.0 and it is fast/responsive on the machine.  It opens up very quickly.

Specs can be obtained from their website, but it does come with 250 gig of storage, 3 gig of ram which is more than adequate.
