Ah! How Green is My Valley?
Pros
Grows quick. Very lush!
Cons
Expensive
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Quick! Get the grass seed down before it rains again!
Phew! Am I ever tired! I just got in from doing a re-seeding job on my front yard. It is already dark outside, by I had the big flood lights turned on while I seeded. My excavator buddy just installed new PVC pipes going from the leaders on my house deep out into the yard. It left some raw earth showing. He also rock-hounded it, which gives it that flat as glass look. All that was left for me to do was put the seed down - about 1/2 mile long....
Well, it was not so bad. I have one of those Scotts Yard Spreaders. I simply dumped the seeds into the hopper, set the opening settings for seeds, and pushed the spreader down hill and back up again. I went through just about 3 bags of this Acer Sun and Shade Grass Seed Mix. Each bag contained about 5 pounds of grass seed.
According to the label, the seed contains: 25.0% Chewing Fescue, 25.0% Perennial Rye,25.0% Premier Perennail Rye, 15.0% Creeping Red Fescue, 10% Barzan Kentucky Bluegrass Grows a lush green lawn under most light conditions Ideal for spring or fall planting Can be planted any time during the growing season.
When I was at the store several weeks ago, I was not really too fussy about which seed I got. My lawn sprouts any seeds prolifically and just about any seeds will grow in my rich top soil (all farm land with approximately 3 feet deep top soil!) Unfortunately for me, this was one of the only seeds for sale at this time of year at my local True Value Store. I only say "unfortunately" because the stuff is expensive for small quantity bags - about $12 per bag.
I had also planted some of this seed a couple of weeks ago near my work shop. That grass is already about 3 inches tall and the once bare dirt covered area is now all green and looking mighty lush! It does grow rather quickly in cool, moist conditions, such as here in NJ. Also, the birds are not so much a problem in the fall as they are in the Spring.
When doing reseeding projects, I usually tend to buy bulk bags of grass seed in 50 pound sacks. Most of the grass is Perennial Rye Grass and it grows rather well in my area. Last Spring, bags that size cost only $35 at the Tractor Supply Company Store. (They also sold out rather quickly too!) I asked the sales clerk at the store why the seed was being sold for so cheap and she told me it had to do with supply. I guess with all the rain we have been getting, seed is rather abundant now.
In comparison to other grass seed I bought, this is just as good. It works. Nothing overly special about it. I don't buy that sun and shade spiel - to me grass seed is grass seed, as long is it is not that cheap annual stuff that dries out, dies, and leaves you with a bare lawn in the summer heat. Stay away! You've been warned! That annual stuff is only good for temporary projects.
I have tried many different brands of grass seed before and everything grows just fine on my lawn. I do not have a "troubled soil" condition or any of that stuff..... Over time, it seems the various grass types on my existing lawn create seeds and blend in over new areas to create a nice, consistent coverage. The grass gets so thick, it chokes out any weeds. This year, with all the rain we got, it was tough keeping the grass cut all season.
Anyway, the Acer Sun and Shade Grass Seed Mix is ok. I would give it a higher rating if it were not so expensive! It just so happens the areas I was re-seeding are both in the sun and shade. Only time will tell how it holds up in the long run, by my bet is that it will be just fine. Thanks for reading my review and best wishes for a nice day!
