Cons
Only stable with 8X AGP boards.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Wait to see if the card proves to be stable. (My experience may have been indictive of the card,....or just my configuration.)
First let me say I am NOT a gamer. However I do like to have top quality components in my computers.
I started building computers about five years ago for myself and many of my friends. I like to know that I am getting good components in my computers.
Well the graphics card that was in my office computer was a Geforce3. I felt it was time to do an update and had read all the reviews and was aware that ATI had taken the crown away from the GeForce chip. So I decided it was ATI for me.
First let me tell you about the computer this graphics card was going into.
The motherboard is an Gigabyte GA-7VRXP. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 2200 . Power supply is an Enermax 550watt (2 fans). The case is an Lian Li with 4 fans. I have a DVD player, A DVD burner, Zip drive, Floppy drive. There are no IRQ conflicts. I am running Windows XP on a Western Digital 120Gig SE hard drive. Sound is provided by Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum. And I have an Asus Geforce3 video card installed.
This combination had been in my computer for several months. Stability was fantastic. Then I took the plunge and bought the new ATI 9800 Pro.
The moment I installed it,...the bios flash became unreadable. It would flicker terribly. I went to ATI's web site to see if they had updated drivers (although I had pre-purchased it. So I was one of the first to get my hands on it.) There were no updates.
But after the bios post,....things seemed to straighten out. My desktop would come up and be nice and clear,.....most of the time. However on about every dozenth or so boot up,.......it would split my screen in half. I would have to restart,....then it would clear up.
After installing the new ATI Video card, I also noticed a tendency for my computer to start locking up. Now this only happened about three or four times in a period of about three weeks. But that is perhaps twice as many times as this computer had locked up since it was built about a year ago.
I knew the only thing different was the new video card. So after starting it up again and having my split screen pop back up,.....I knew it was time to remove it.
Now the motherboard I mentioned earlier is only a AGP4X motherboard. The video card is supposed to work at 4X or 8X. But perhaps it prefers 8X.
All I can tell you for sure,....is it did not work with my combination. So it now sits in my closet,....to be tried out on the next computer I put together. (With an 8x AGP supported board.)
After putting back in my Geforce3 card,....everything is stable again.
My advice would be to wait and see what other adventurous buyers say before plucking down $399.00 on a card that my have problems with stability.
I recently updated my computer motherboard to a Gigabyte GA-7NNXP/Athlon XP 3000 with Dual Channel Memory. This is Gigabytes top of the line board for a 32 bit AMD processor. It is an 8X AGP board. I then reinstalled the ATI 9800 pro video card. It still has some funny dots that come up during post up. But it now seems very stable and I have not had the split screen show up. So it does seem that it was my previous configuration.
I have also purchased the Leadtek Winfast A350TDH. (GeForce FX 5900) But have not installed it into the computer yet. I hope to get the chance to check it out over the next couple of weeks.
