The thought of a single video card with a DVD/MPEG decoder, TV tuner and a software package with the exact features I wanted was too hard to turn down. The All-in-Wonder Radeon would provide me with lightning fast graphics for games which I had never before possessed. It would allow me a simple point and a couple of clicks to record a movie while I slept. I had dreams of editing my recordings onto a CD and play then back onto my television. The TV out features would provide me with that as well as allow my DVDs to be viewed on my television.
My dreams hit a reality check the moment the AIW Radeon was installed. The card refused to comply to my motherboard's wishes. The VIA KT133 chipset just wouldn't play nice with the card. After a few hours of struggles, I managed to get newer drivers from ATI which improved the situation a little. I ended up spending hours every day checking IRQs, BIOS upgrades and motherboard drivers to no avail. I returned to ATI and downloaded their unsupported drivers. The unsupported drivers were already over two months old when I first installed them. They are now three months old without an update or Microsoft signature. They also have not fixed all of my problems although my "lockups by the minute" have dissolved down to isolated ones.
If a stable set of drivers ever arrive, I will be more that happy to provide a more involved review of the AIW Radeon. Since I have yet to have a successful scheduled recording, there seems little sense in going further. The Card works as a video card and a tuner with an almost unbearable amount of lockups. My old cards are going back in.
