My new home office phone is GREAT!

Pros Nice looks, plenty of features, big buttons, easy to use
Cons Needs more 1-touch dial #'s, QA/QC issues (but not with my phone)
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  While there may have been some quality issues from previous phones, they seem to be gone. A wonderful home office phone with plenty of features!
Wow. OK, well it seems I'm about to offer a completely different opinion of the AT&T 992 corded telephone! After reading the other 2 opinions (as of 3/29/06) I had to ask myself if I had the same phone! The answer is YES and my experience could not be more opposite than what the other reviews noted. This is a great phone that should serve the home-office community well.

I began having problems with my last office phone here at the home office and decided to go pick up a new unit. This one was on sale at Staples and had all the features I was looking for: speakerphone, caller ID, ability to handle 2 lines, easy 1-touch dial, professional looks and more.

The Good
This is a very nice looking phone. It's very professional looking on my desk over many of the phones aimed more towards the home user you might find at Best Buy. The buttons are large and easy to read and have a nice feel to them.

Operation of the phone is very easy. No, not the typical placing a call, but things like the speakerphone or navigating the menu or entering #'s into memory or placing a call on mute or hold. The caller ID works perfectly on my unit and it shows up immediately, though admittedly I am only using 1-line and not 2 like another reviewer noted. On my last phone, it seemed to have a bit of a delay but with this phone I know before the end of the 1st ring who is calling me.

Another nice feature is the line indicator. I have my fax hooked up to the same line as this phone and sometimes I'll start a fax and forget that it's sending and pick up the receiver to make a call only to hear the dreaded fax screeching in the speaker. On this phone a red light shows up when the line is in use which you might not see as a big deal, but it dawned on me after I bought this phone that my last phone would not do this hence the great # of times I picked up while a fax was sending. Needless to say, I have to be extremely pre-occupied or half asleep to not notice the red line in-use light staring me down. The new call indicator also functions nicely showing me who I missed while I was away instead of having to dig in a menu to find it. I turned on the voicemail indicator light and it, too, works nicely and I am using Verizon phone service here in Southern California.

Redial works well and I also like the display dial feature. When you pick up the phone or activate the speakerphone to make a call, you can press a button to call the last # that called you which I have used dozens of times; it's like a hard-wired *69 feature..a very cool little feature.

The speakerphone works nice and I never feel that I have to hover right over the phone for someone to hear me. The volume is adequate and sometimes I have to turn it down depending on who I call on the other end, but I hardly see the level of another's voice as a negative!

The Bad
Honestly, I'm hard pressed to come up with a legitimate gripe. I guess I wish it had more 1-touch dial entries, but that's about it. Oh, and I guess some people might complain that it's just the standard "business-like" ringer and no option to have "old MacDonald had a farm" like my old phone, but I hardly consider that a negative. I've not experienced ANY of the problems other reviews note. I use pencil on the directory card for the very purpose of easy removal and editing of names and if memory serves me, it came with 2 extra directory cards, but don't quote me on that. The reliability issues noted in the other reviews are legit, I guess, but I hardly see how it warrants giving this product 1-star. It sounds like they had a bad batch of LCD's or some other problems with the phone that mine does not seem to be plagued with. For that reason, I guess it's a knock on the consistency of the phone and not worthy of 5-stars for an obvious quality control issue. I've not had to deal with AT&T or V-Tech customer service so I cannot comment on that, though that might be another sour note.

Summary
I say buy it. I've not had any problems with mine and find it to be a full-featured and dependable home-office phone that's a great deal for the price. My guess is that if more people reviewed this phone there would be plenty more positive experiences than negative and the negative reviews came from a batch of phones whose plant QA/QC manager was asleep at the wheel. I'm sorry to hear that other people had issues with the phone as it's always a bummer to buy something and get a dud and then to see that another identical product operates perfectly :(

Hopefully those issues are permanently cured and phones from then on exhibit more of the performance and reliability that I've noted, which has been nothing short of fantastic.
