A great computer for students or anyone who needs good battery life!
Pros
Speed, Battery life, low weight, 10 hour battery, cheaper than a mac.
Cons
None at this time.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A great value. Battery lasts a long time. Plenty of space, all the computer you will ever need. Half the cost of some comparable Mac models.
I went into Best Buy looking for a netbook. I needed something with great battery life that I could take to a whole day of college classes and not worry about charging. I thought that the only thing that was going to have that battery life was a netbook. It's a good thing that I wondered over to the full-size laptops after discovering the poor performance netbooks offer.
I saw this Asus, and a similar Toshiba which lacked an opitical drive. I was impressed by the advertised 9 hour and 45 minute battery life. The computer had been underclocked to achieve that great battery life with a bigger computer, and you can easily overclock the processor if you desire better performance. Although, no one would ever think this thing is running a 1.3 dual core. It performs just as fast as any 2.2 or even my 2.6 dual core desktop. Programs are quick to open, and features do not lag at all. I think that is partly due to the 4 gigs of ram.
I was also impressed with the size of the hard drive. 500GB was four times what the wimpy netbooks offered. It allows you to really carry every bit of your data anywhere you go...without worrying about battery life. Also, the speakers on this computer are great for an ultra light laptop. Most computers that are so small either do not have them, or they sound headphone speakers.
Needless to say, I walked out of bestbuy with this laptop in hand. In the two months I have had it, I have not had any problems. The keyboard is very ergonomic, it's very easy to get typing very fast on. The number pad is also a great feature. has lots of nice little shortcuts...volume, screen brightness, VGA/External display, and even a calculator shortcut. It still performs like day one. I got the best buy optimized one, which already had the trial software removed.
This computer will not disappoint. After using it for hours on my lap, it will not get warm and burn my lap. That is due in part to the underclocked processor. It consumes less power and produces less heat. Plenty of ram, hard drive space, and speed.
Materials quality is top-notch. Feels like you are getting mac fit and finish for a steal. Real aluminum on the lid...and a very cool soft touch material on the base of the laptop that does not show fingerprints!
And the best of all, yes...the battery does last the advertised 10 hours! I didn't believe it at first, but it sure does!
