Asus 1000h - Side by Side Comparison with MSI Wind - Winner 1000h!

byBob61 Aug 16, 2008
Pros Great sound, great display, more than ample for netbook needs.
Cons Nothing really.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great option for your netbook needs.
The market for netbooks is getting crowded. Fortunately there are several great options. For my review I'm comparing the Asus 1000h to the MSI Wind. Both are very similar in price and features, so much that people seem to have a hard time trying to decide what's right for them.

First, let me start by saying the 1000h is a netbook computer. It's designed to particularly for portability. If you are looking for high end graphics support, a netbook is probably not for you. If you are looking for a portable system, light in weight, suitable for tasks such as web browsing, email, word processing, light gaming, image editing and the like, the netbooks systems, especially the 1000h, will more than meet your needs. One should not compare a netbook too a laptop, they serve different needs, much like an SUV serves a different purpose than a sedan.

As I mentioned previously the netbook market is getting crowded. In my search for the right netbook for me I've purchased the HP2133 (the worst of the bunch), the MSI Wind (3 cell) and Asus 1000h. The HP was out of here in a week, just couldn't find that to meet my needs, even basic graphics such as viewing YouTube videos was painful (the Wind and 1000h do that reasonably well).

With both the Wind and 1000h in hand I had the dilemma to which netbook to keep. After using both for about 4 weeks I decided to keep the Asus 1000h. Below is a summary of a comparison of both, highlighting what each does well. My choise of Asus 1000h over the Wind came down to the bigger battery, the Fn-Ctrl key being in "right" position on 1000h and that I can upgrade RAM without voiding my warranty. Both were almost same net price to me, so price was neutral in my decision.

1000h Pro's

- Better speakers (or at least better sounding, don't know if it's due to drivers or speakers itself
- Bigger battery so better battery usage (5-6 hours vs 2-2.5).
- FN & CTRL keys in "correct" placement on keyboard
- Bigger touchpad and distinct buttons
- Slightly better "feel" and tactical response from keyboard
- Will not void warranty to upgrade RAM (as separate door to install RAM)
- Multitouch pad has better features
- Better balance (with screen tilted back the Wind was slightly unbalanced and would tilt backward, 1000h seems to have weight more evenly dispersed)
- Improved Sound Manager program for sound output
- Camera light comes on when in use (no light on Wind)
- Stereo microphones (mono on Wind)
- GUI for ACPI buttons to me seems "friendlier" on the 1000h, example when you cycle through turning on/off the WAN/Bluetooth the 1000h is easier for me - subtle I suppose
- Inclusive of Works and Star Office for installation (some would probably prefer not to have either but for same cost toss things in, easy enough to remove if not desired by end user)
- Slightly faster at boot-up (about 5-10 sec)
- Ability to overclock (but can't say any noticeable improvement, minor at best)
- "N" wireless, I don't have "N" router but nice to know if/when I upgrade it's there
- No fan surge when first boot up, don't know if typical but my Wind would have a very loud hum from fan when first boot up (others have reported similar)
- Ability to easily go into 800x600, 1024x600 or 1024x768 resolution with FN-keypress
- Printed manual included (my Wind only had manual on DVD)
- Casing feels more solid that Wind (but that seems to come with trade off of increased weight)

Wind Pro's

- Slightly lighter in weight, seems to be mostly from casing based on weight without battery
- Doesn't show finger prints as much
- Lighter touch to the buttons on touchpad (1000h is stiffer)
- Great source of information (this forum, found nothing as informative yet for 1000h)
- Upgrade to 2GB only needs 1GB chip (1GB soldered onto MB) so slightly cheaper, but reportedly will void warranty
- HD in Wind seems slightly quieter
- Seems to run slightly cooler than 1000h
- Single finger scrolling using touchpad (takes two fingers on 1000h)
- Battery connector in back instead of on side - user preference I suppose
- I've found Wind to have better WAN card, the quality of the connection at next floor in house always showed as "excellent" on Wind, only shows as "very good" on 1000h
- Slightly smaller, but honestly I can't tell a difference in just using it - put it side by side and you'll notice

Screen display seems to be about the same, I've not noticed any significant difference in the displays (other than ability to display 1024x768 on 1000h, but not impressed with resolution).

Sleeve that came with Wind seems to have more padding and seems to feel of higher quality. But the trade off is 1000h sleeve is less bulky and looks more professional.

Overall both are great laptops. Subtle differences, nothing that I've really found as deal breaker. A couple swayed me to the 1000h over Wind. With 6 cell Winds now out the issue on battery life is not as big a deal. Wind slightly smaller and lighter, 1000h with better key placement for Fn/Ctrl keys and such.
