Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a great machine, and I recommend anyone who needs a small PC to buy this one!!
I am selling my house to move to a new area, and it only seemed to make sence to get a laptop so that I still had computer access. Looking on the internet I found the EEE 1000H. I was impressed.

I had many questions, and couldn't find all the answers clearly on the internet. I researched enough to know I wanted one, but unsure if the EEE would deliver as I had hoped. I decided to buy one anyway.

My initial impression of the EEE was that it was very well built. The shiny casing looks very nice, and the design is very well laid out. The touchpad is very nice, with a good looking metal outline and buttons. The hinges are smooth opening the screen. The keyboard showed none of the earlier editions flexing. I pressed the power button.

The computer boots surprizingly fast. Far faster then my P4 3.6GHZ with hyper threading, 4GB RAM. Windows XP ran the setup and soon after the computer restarted and was ready to go. I could instanly connect to the wireless G network in my house and surf the internet. The computer felt like it was very powerful.

Being that I prefer Vista, I installed it not long after opening the EEE box for the first time. Installation was fast using a USB DVD-ROM. I did nothing different then an upgrade to any other Windows PC. Once Vista was loaded, I encountered some problems. Much of my hardware was not recognized, and I had no internet connectivity. Using my EEE DVD in the DVD ROM, I ran the install files for the drivers and managed to get everything but two hardware items running.

The Wireless B/G/N adapter wasn't working, or some unknown device. I downloaded Vista drivers for the Wireless and once again I had internet! I used the following file: IS_AP_STA_RT2860_D-1.1.6.0_VA-2.1.0.0_RU-2.1.6.0_VA-2.2.1.0_AU_2.0.6.0_VA-2.0.6.0_081308_1.0.3.0_NH.exe which is provided by the manufacturer RaLink.

The unknown device is the hardware that runs some of the shortcut buttons on the keyboard, and are not supported (yet?) in Vista. Otherwise everything worked well.

I did some speed tweaks to Vista, you can find them all over the in ternet searching in Google for Vista tweaks. I removed services that were not needed, and the like. Running Windows update, there where over 80 updates to do, but after half the day they installed completely.

This Atom 1.6GHZ Processor is a very good piece of hardware. It supports hyperthreading, and seems to handle Vistavery well. Under the performance center, the EEE rates as a 2.7, but if the video card was a little better the EEE could be in the 4's since its other ratings are that high.

The computer runs very quiet. Now running Vista, it still boots very fast. ReadyBoost works well and helps to speed things up more. I have connected an LCD monitor to the EEE, and that worked very well. I could change settings to make the screen look just like a bigger desktop PC with screen resolution. I could even extend the desktop across the LCD and the EEE screen and use UltraMon.

I have played Wolfenstein Enemy Territory on the EEE, and using a virtual drive, SimCity 4.

I have a printer hooked up, running well. A scanner, USB Harddrive, several thumb drives, a memory stick, DVD-ROM, and wireless USB keyboard and mouse. Everything works like my other larger PC. ALl the devices are hosted across the network and usable to others on the network.

The battery in Vista lasts over 4.5 hours using the Vista performance settings. That is very respectable as my wifes Laptop only gets about 2 hours.

I have ripped CD's to media player and played music, which sounded very nice. The EEE didn't not breakup the sound at all and really did sound nice.

I used Skype and the built in webcam worked flawlessly without any bother. I didn't even remember there was the cam, but the other caller mentioned how good the video looked.

The harddrive is partitioned to two 40GB drives, about 35GB free on each. I installed Windows on one, and all the other stuff on the second.

I could talk more, but I have to go.
