The Bottom Line:
If you want a quality Netbook with a good feature set and excellent battery life pick this up.
I had my eye on a netbook for some time before I finally purchased an ASUS Eee Seashell 1005HA-PU17-BU. I wanted the best bang for my buck and this beauty fit the bill at the time. I waited for the new version with Windows 7 Starter and an upgraded 250GB hard drive. When it finally arrived I was not disappointed.
At first glance the 1005HA looks like a fancy portable DVD player. Almost a work of art. With its 1.66Ghz Intel Atom processor, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, 10.1” LED backlit display, and 250GB hard drive this machine is able to handle all basic computing tasks. At less than 3 lbs it is easy to lug around wherever I go.
This netbook is plenty fast for what it is meant for (web browsing and other basic tasks). I am pleased with the keyboard size and layout. I have no problems typing a document or surfing the web. I have smaller hands, but I don’t think a larger handed person would have an issue. 1GB of RAM is not much for any Windows 7 system, so I upgraded to 2GB (G.SKILL 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 # F2-6400CL5S-2GBSQ). There is only one memory slot, so you will need to replace the 1GB stick with a 2GB stick. I noticed an increase in performance while running multiple programs at the same time or many browser windows. Another way to increase the memory capacity beyond 2GB is through what is called Windows ReadyBoost. Basically you can use any high speed flash memory like a USB memory stick or secure digital (SD) card. I use a Sandisk Extreme III 8GB SDHC card since there is a built in slot in this Asus netbook. I leave it in all the time and have the entire 8GB configured for ReadyBoost. It asks like virtual memory, but is faster than virtual memory assigned to the hard drive. This seems to help performance although I have not noticed it to the same degree as the 2GB RAM upgrade.
Battery life is excellent. With the screen dimmed down and wi-fi turned off I can achieve the rated 10.5 hour life. As I brighten the screen, turn wi-fi on and use more programs battery life diminishes. On average I easily obtain 6-8 hours of battery life when I am not conserving power.
One final note regarding the use of a TV tuner with this netbook. It works albeit not as well as a full powered desktop or laptop. I use an eVGA inDTube ATSC/NTSC USB TV Tuner (# 100-U2-IDTV-A1) that I purchased on sale. It works fine except for the video occasionally getting choppy. It is defiantly watchable. I am actually quite surprised at how well it works.
For traveling or surfing the web on the couch this netbook is perfect. It is easy to throw into a backpack and jump on a plane or bus. I even bring it camping! Asus is a great brand that I have come to trust over the years. This netbook is no exception.
