Usually the last thing we think about when we are purchasing computer software and hardware is the quality of the electrical power to feed it. After all, power costs only about 7 cents per watt-hour to run our thousand-dollar plus investment.

CONSIDER THAT THE POWER ITSELF CAN LITERALLY RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT IN LESS THAN ONE SECOND! The Power Company's guarantee to you is that you receive power, and that the average power is 120 volts, plus or minus 10%. What do you really get when you plug your computer into the wall? You get the guaranteed volts, but you also get oscillatory problems, brown outs, surges, spikes, and power outages. (Email me if you want definitions or explanations.)

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
One way to protect your equipment is an Uninterrupted Power Supply or UPS. UPSs have line conditioners that protect against surges, sags, and brownouts. The proper UPS and software configuration can give you the ability for an orderly shutdown of your computer during a power failure. An UPS will cost from $100 to $2,000, depending on its quality and the up time after power is lost.

APC Back-UPS Pro 500
I purchased my APC Back-UPS 500 in late 1999, from Batteries Plus. This was somewhat in preparation for Y2K, but being an Operations Manager, I worked around and with many UPS systems --- large and small.

I DO NOT have the sleek looking black professional model shown in the magazines; that model is more expensive and overkill for my requirements. I have the square, beige model APC Back-UPS 500 with two protected outlets and an additional surge protected outlet for my printer. This unit will support my CPU and monitor for an orderly shutdown. I estimate no more than 15 minutes of battery up time. I also have my telephone line plugged into the back of this APC 500, to prevent those "back door" surges that can come into your PC via the telephone line. For me, this is adequate protection. I have not installed the APC software.

You would be surprised how many times the audible alarm rings in a month. Every time I wash clothes, when the cycle changes from fill to agitate --- the alarm goes off! That is many power fluctuations that my PC equipment never feels!

As I mentioned, I purchased this from Batteries Plus, but not before going to APC's web site and printing a coupon for $30. The price of my UPS was approximately $100 worth of insurance. Watch their web site: http://www.apc.com for specials.

APC is a top-notch vendor! They have been in the business for years and have a fine reputation for a quality product. They manufacture UPS systems for single PC's to entire computer rooms. I believe the warranty is for $25,000 against any damage to your equipment

After investing your time and money into purchasing and installing the right software and hardware for your work, be certain to think just as hard about the protection you might need from your power lines.
