The Bottom Line:
The HP Pavilion Slimline has worked out well for us.
I've had my HP Pavilion Slimline s3020n PC for six months or so now, and I'm very happy with this computer. The only problems I've had with the HP Slimline involved the Vista programming. That was pretty new when I bought this PC over the summer, and some of my equipment did not work. Companies have added Vista fixes for those problems.
I'm hard on computers. I'm on a whole lot and do all sorts of stuff when I'm on. My last computer went belly up and pretty quick. It was a Dell, and I hated it. Customer service was horrible. I knew for sure that I didn't want another Dell.
The main reason I got the Hewlett Packard Pavilion Slimsline was because it was so small. It's about half the size of the other computers I've owned but with equal or more power. The hard drive is 250 gb. System memory is 1024 mb. The larger computers I had before were hard for me to wrestle around when I needed to get to the back, and they were heavy to carry in to the shop. The small size was very appealing. I'm still really happy about this smaller size console.
On the front of the computer, there's a CD/DVD burner. It works great. No problems. It will also burn custom CDs. You have to buy special CDs, but then you can put art or photos right on the CD.
There are also photo card holes. I don't use those, because I have a SanDisk that stays hooked up and will handle all sizes. I edit a lot of photos, and that's how I'd been doing it. It's nice to have those on the computer though if I ever need them.
HP only put one USB port on the front. I wish they'd put more. There are 4 in the back. It's easy to turn this machine around, so I can do that. It would still be nice to have extra USB ports, especially since my kid has an iPod and uses the port quite a bit. I have most of my USB items plugged in the back. We unplug the iPod when we want to save things to travel drives.
The keyboard with the Slimline is low end, but it's OK. The mouse was a piece of junk. I used it about 3 weeks, before the ball jammed up and started jerking the cursor around. That made me curse. But I bought a good mouse, so now that's OK.
The monitor (HP w1907) is very nice. It's wide and the colors are bright and clear. The monitor is flat and also light weight.
I write with the HP Pavilion Slimslim every day. I also lay out the college newspaper using PageMaker and do the photos with PhotoShop. The boys do their school papers. Our computer is basically on all the time and in use on a steady basis.
Once companies came up with "fixes" like new drivers for the add ons like my scanner and once I bought a decent mouse, everything has been fine with the HP Slimline.
