The Bottom Line:
I recommend this high quality product because of its ability to capture fantastic vocals, its design, and versatility in other applications.
I purchased this mic brand new off of ebay at an amazing blowout price and I am glad I made this purchase.
Upon reading the description at most on-line retailers websites or even the AKG site you might see that its description mentions that this microphone is recommended for vocals. It is also recommended for instrument recording as well.
The packaging of the C414B XLII is comprehensive and all-inclusive. The AKG C414B XLII comes in an aluminum flight case. The flight case has thin walls but there is thick corrugated foam on the inside of the case as well. The package includes the microphone, a velvet bag for the mic, a custom shockmount, a pop filter, a hand-signed frequency response chart with matching serial number to the mic, and user's manual. The user manual is user friendly and includes diagrams.
The mic itself is box-like in shape and small. The grill on the front of the mic is gold but it has a dark grey/blackish grill on the back. Holding the mic up to light you can clearly see the suspended diaphragm. It has , three switches: one on the front to switch polarity patterns and two in the back for pad attenuation and roll off. The mic feels solid and heavier than would be expected for such a compact unit. The serial number is on the "stem" of the mic and matches with the included frequency response chart for this particular microphone.
The mic features switchable polarity patters via an illuminated switch on the front of the mic. On the rear of the mic it has two switches: one for pat attenuation, the other for bass roll off.
I ran the mic through a Presonus Eureka Channel Strip and it sounded fantastic on vocals. Since this mic's introduction to my studio it has become the standard vocal mic. So far it has sounded great on every artist who has had the chance to record on it and tends to naturally place it's recordings into the mix. I have also recorded shakers, tambourine, and a bass amp with it and it has shined in each application.
Overall I have not really found anything that I do not like about this mic. Everyone who has recorded on it in my studio has raved about it and I also recommend this mic as a high-end vocal mic. Whether it gets used as your primary mic or an addition to your mic locker, it is a great investment for people who are serious about the sound of their vocals.
