The Bottom Line:

ACCO Brands 71511: Prong Paper Fasteners and Washers offered in boxes of 100 in a single size are a mainstay in the Primary Grade classroom.
From paper plate art projects, to crafting student art and/or writing books, to making spinners for games Prong Paper Fasteners and Washers in a variety of sizes are an indispensable commodity.
ACCO Brass Washers are used singly or below and above the paper to provide a better hold and help prevent tearing. Washers are designed to accommodate roundhead prong paper fasteners from 1.25 inches to a hefty 4 inches long. Generated of solid brass for utmost sturdiness and long life these washers are corrosion-free. Boxed as 100 washers per box washers are available in walk in brick and mortar stores as well as on line from a variety of sites.
Acco quality bright finished, all brass fasteners meet each government specifications regarding safety and standards. Generated from solid brass these fasteners provide greatest sturdiness and durability in a broad diversity of sizes from tiny 1.25 inch fasteners to 1.5, 2, and even long shank 4 inch sizes. Shanks having piercing pointed ends penetrate several sheets of paper without difficulty.
I will admit that Osage County First Grade, as have countless classes of First Graders taught by myself, in addition to all those Primary students taught in classrooms across the nation make good use of these fasteners.
I do take a tad of umbrage with the verbiage offered by the company itself, to wit, -shanks having piercing pointed ends penetrate several sheets of paper without difficulty-, yes, in the hands of older students, adults and those with a tad of experience; the fasteners are used without difficulty.
Instructors of Little Learners face two hurdles prior to classroom usage with prong fasteners.
In the hands of Little Learners during their first experience with these minions of art and writing projects prong fasteners are a device filled with magic, excitement, and deafness.
Preparing for hurdle one I have found that keeping all fasteners and washers, if they too are being used for the project, in my grasp as I show Little Learners the procedure for inserting prongs into paper is much more successful than passing the fasteners around with other materials to be used for the particular project.
Most of the ventures Osage County First Grade undertake requiring prong fasteners are art projects, many are paper plate or construction paper projects. We pierce the construction paper, and punch a hole in paper plates before inserting the prongs. Manual dexterity for six year olds has not yet developed to the fine touch needed to insert brass prongs into thick paper plate materials as successfully.
I do caution children that the fasteners can pierce fingers as well as paper, this information is unheard by those little mesmerized persons as I hold the fastener, and prepare to once again stab my own finger.
Once the spot of red blood on the tip of my finger is visible; every child becomes quiet and filled with the attention needed.
Thank goodness I have had to only stab my own finger once each year.
Once that particular - take care stabbing finger hurts - hurdle is crossed; we prepare for the second.
The wisest child in the classroom will go blind deaf the instant the fastener touches the hand, instantly all instruction regarding DO NOT OPEN THE PRONGS before inserting into paper is erased from their understanding.
And I prepare for hurdle 2: I personally do not follow my own instruction regarding DO NOT OPEN PRONGS, and, as all eyes are fixed upon the mesmerizing fastener in my hand, I open the prongs and stab, stab, stab at the paper with a fastener that will never pierce that piece of paper.
Then I pass the fasteners, immediately one child or another opens the prongs. As Little Learners begin to grasp that open prongs just plain will not go into the paper; then we are ready to learn to use the fasteners.
As soon as those hurdles open/closed prongs, use caution; stabbing your finger hurts and blood on the project is just plain not pretty, are crossed; ACCO Brass fasteners and washers are invaluable for classroom usage.
And you thought teachers lived that fun and easy life in the classroom, didn't you?
I can see that ACCO Brands prong fasteners and washers would have use in office and business settings for attaching papers and perhaps adding a bit of pizzazz to the visual view of the materials, however, I suspect that the majority of the fasteners are found in classrooms, whether home school, public school, Sunday School as well as home use for projects when the kids are home and need something to do on rainy days, or long summer out of school and I'm tired of my toys and swimming days.
An invaluable for use in the Primary Grade classroom; ACCO Brands Prong Paper Fasteners and Washers offered in boxes of 100 in a single size are ustilized with gusto by Osage County First Grade. Happy to recommend.
