1989's CROSS THAT LINE continues Howard Jones' streak of satisfying commercial pop albums. Throughout the '80s, Jones made the sort of pop singles that were catchy and slick enough for Top 40 radio but had enough musical meat that fans of more challenging fare didn't reach for the dial when they came one. George Michael may have gotten more press, but Howard Jones was arguably more consistent and certainly less pretentious. CROSS THAT LINE contains one of Jones' best singles, the intoxicatingly giddy "Everlasting Love," and nine other pop gems. When the 1970s punk scene was washed away by the undertow of '80s new wave, few bands surfed the transition as well as the Go-Go's. These Valley grrrls dressed up their punk heritage with a sense of glamour so that their music was at once ballsy and fanciful. The peppery singles "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed" were their debut's chart climbers and glossiest tracks. The rest of the album has a tougher crust. For example, the jittery "Can't Stop the World" would make the Ramones proud. Clan of Xymox made two albums for 4AD Records in the mid '80s, the label's heyday--and, it turns out, the band's as well. Clan of Xymox (1985) and Medusa (1986) were perfect slices of moody, lovelorn gothic pop--reminiscent of New Order, only more morose. But the band fragmented shortly after, shedding members, reducing its name to simply Xymox, and releasing halfhearted plays to the dance floor that failed to make an impression. In the late '80s, Testament was one of the pioneers of California's Bay area thrash metal scene, but over the years the band mellowed a bit, and its two early-'90s records for Atlantic were well-crafted, but less than bombastic. Apparently, Testament aimed to make amends with Demonic, a furious album that blends the band's trademark hooks with ferocious death metal intensity. The only weak link is vocalist Chuck Billy, who has seems to have traded his melodic voice to the devil in exchange for a genuine "grindcore" growl. --Jon Wiederhorn

When Dinosaur’s first record was released in 1985, it didn’t make much of a stir. This is understandable, and not because the album is a bit of a sprawling mess, because it’s a pretty great sprawling mess. It’s simply that much of the point of punk had been to "cut out the guitar solos," to quote the Minutemen.
