Enroute, both men fall for lead singer and blond bombshell Sugar Kane, (Marilyn Monroe), but are unable to fulfill their desires for fear of revealing their identity. Joe tries to get around this by adopting a third identity for seduction, that of a shy millionaire who sounds strangely like Cary Grant. Meanwhile Jerry has his own problems, fighting off the advances of Osgood E. Fielding, a real millionaire hypnotized by his/her charms.

This offbeat musical was certainly a departure for director Lewis Milestone featuring rhyming dialogue and an excellent score by Rodgers and Hart. The film stars Al Jolson as Bumper mayor of the hobos a man who would rather sleep in the park than get a job. But after he saves the real mayor's amnesiac girlfriend June Madge Evans when she tries to drown herself he falls in love with the woman and even contemplates the possibility of gainful employment.

Jolson found one of his better movie roles in Hallelujah, I'm a Bum!, a curious 1933 artifact of the early-sound, pre-Code era, a movie replete with music, political comment, and occasionally risqué humor. Jolie plays "the mayor of Central Park," a happy hobo who cleans up after he meets an amnesiac beauty. Alas, the workaday world isn't what it's cracked up to be, as his leisure-minded pals knew all along. "Spook Louder" (1943, short number 70 in the Columbia series) has little more than the sinister presence of Charles "Ming the Merciless" Middleton to recommend it. The short is told as a flashback by a nutty-professor type, and the flimsy plot has the boys in a "haunted" house being terrified by three men in costume (but mostly by each other). There is a running gag of pies being thrown by some invisible hand, but it does not work and nor does the explanation at the end. "If a Body Meets a Body" (1945, short number 86), however, is a great improvement.
