The Bottom Line:
Build quality over time just is not worth it. Will not buy another Philips product.
I bought a a 42pf9630a in 2005 through work and received a discount. At the time, I was happy with the price (about 2300) but have battled with the TV ever since.
After less than a year, I had to have it serviced. After viewing a while, the tv picture would go blank, then sound would shut down, then turn on again. It was like the TV was crashing and rebooting. While the service call was free, the TV was gone for 2 weeks at the repair shop while they attempted to reproduce the problem. They change a power supply(?) and the problem went away.
I originally used a Comcast DVR box connected to the tv using RGB connectors. This caused many problems. When activating the menu on the dvr, the tv would go blank. I also had an issue where the screen would only show reds and blacks, like a negative. I changed the connection from RGB to Video and these problems went away. I tried using the RGB connection with a DVD player, but get the same black/red picture from time to time.
Now, after the set warms up, the picture will become a single line. It can be cleared up with a few soft raps to the front/top of the TV, so I suspect a lose connection or cold socket. The TV is no longer under warranty and this repair will be out of pocket. I plan to drop the TV off this weekend for repair.
