Developed by Curtiss to compete in air races in the 1920s the R3C proved to be a trophy-winning biplane in both its land- and sea-based versions. In 1925 the famous soon-to-be raider Jimmy Doolittle won the Schneider Trophy in a seaplane race over Chesapeake Bay. He also set a world seaplane speed record the next day and the aircraft took the Schneider trophy again the following year at the hands of pilot Christian Frank Schilt.This speedster is reproduced here in its seaplane variant the R3C-2 as flown by Jimmy Doolittle. One is even utilized by the Queen of England's personal helicopter fleet as a VIP transport.
