Cons Not completely waterproof and can be cracked or broken when force applied.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Make a dull transaction more colorful and protect your CDs and DVDs with jewel toned cases. Your disks will thank you for it!
Express Review: I love 'em, they're great! Full Review: I'm a Computer Geek, and I'm proud. Or maybe just a regular Geek that works with computers for my job and personal life. I create, store, modify and transfer data to my friends, family and clients. For my job I work with large data files, mainly GIS files called geodatabases, and image or raster files. I also publish map files as large as 100 MB each. When clients want their data or map files, I often use digital transfers like email, FTP or offsite storage. But sometimes, I prefer delivering CDs or DVDs as more permanent records. I also share pictures and videos with family members, and sometimes the easiest method is burning a CD or DVD with images and videos.

Now that you know my Geekstory, I feel qualified to discuss these Memorex Slim Color Jewel Cases. We all know that the integrity of CDs and DVDs can be compromised ~ just ask any elephant what happens when he accidentally steps on one or eats it for breakfast. The answer to protecting disks is storing them in Memorex Jewel Cases! Your media will travel in style when ensconced in Jewel  cases.

Dimensions: Each case measures 5 1/2 x 5 inches. They are marketed as half the size of standard jewel cases, although I've never compared them to other cases. Indeed, these are SLIM at only 6 millimeters in depth.  They are composed of transparent, recyclable plastic with a hinged opening. The top half is crystal clear and the bottom half is one of the following attractive colors, which I have named:

Tanzanite Orange * Elizabeth Taylor Violet * Emerald City Green * Ruby Slipper Pink * Star Sapphire Blue

Usage: CDs and DVDs are easily installed and removed from slim jewel cases, and will not fall out when locked inside. They can be stuffed in padded envelopes for mailing by parcel post. To remove disks from the case, grasp the case in one hand and press the center with the other to dislodge the disk. Don't use the grab and pull method ~ I broke many of these cases before mastering this simple technique.

How Sturdy Is It? Memorex promises these cases "Protect What Matters." You may wonder, can they withstand a herd of elephants? Not having access to a herd of animals, I tested their impact by jumping on the case with a CD inside. (Note: I weigh less than an elephant). The case didn't break, but cracked a little, still protecting the disk inside. Next, I wrung the case from side to side. That totally cracked and partially shattered the case, but the disk was still protected. Finally, I submerged it in water. The case floated, which means you could take them sailing and if cast overboard, they might not sink to the bottom of the lake. The disk inside was damp, but not completely wet, leading to the conclusion that disks inside are generally protected from spills, but there is no guarantee of waterproof qualities.

Guarantee: Memorex offers a limited warantee against defects for 1 year from purchase, in which a replacement product may be obtained. I doubt that covers damage from wild or tame animals, floods or other natural or human-caused disasters. But, it's nice to know that if these cases came already damaged, you could receive a replacement disk.

Value:  At $6 for fifty, these cases are a great value. Just like buying hotdogs requires a separate bun purchase, disks often require a separate purchase of sleeves or cases. Sleeves may be appropriate for storing disks in albums, but for transferring your media, these cases are an attractive, sturdy and highly recommended product that's well worth the investment.

Overall, I love presenting media in these jewel toned cases. I'm a colorful gal. These jewel toned cases make a drab presentation much more spiffy and less boring. After all, transferring files is basically a dull activity. Why not exude your inner rainbow of creativity with these?
