Pros Amazing visuals, does honor to an epic historical legend.
Cons Takes liberties with an epic historical legend.

"Graphic novelist" (aka comics artist) and writer Frank Miller seems to be on a roll. As far as translating works from story art to big screen is concerned, Miller is very likely the premiere writer/artist in his field. You may or may not know that going into 300; and I suspect for the most part... Read full review »

300 (2006)

As a history buff I had to finally see 300 and once I did I had mixed feelings. The movie was quite well made visually, and about 90% of it was computer generated.  The story, acting, and music was very questionable with most of the 300 (count em) Spartans going about pretty... Read full review »

Like the 300 Spartans, I Shall Stand Alone With My Low Opinion of This Film.

I'm generally not that picky about my action-packed loosely historical epics. In fact, I even loved Troy, which was widely panned by critics and movie-goers. 300 had nearly all the makings of a film I should have loved. Action and gory battle scenes? Check. Greek stuff? Check. Hotties in uniform?... Read full review »

300 Soldiers Go Into the Corridor, Where Numbers Matter for Nothing

bydramastef Mar 12, 2007

Pros Visual effects; music; acting; action; story
Cons It's a whole lot of violence and testosterone in one sitting
Recommended it? Yes

In my experience, truly enjoyable movies are either about very deep, complicated things, but simple in execution, or about very simple ideas and stunning in visual feats, sound, and all the extras. 300 falls into the latter group.

300 Spartans = Five Stars

Pros Action, Cinematography, Acting, Dialogue, Sound Effects
Cons Not exactly historically accurate, Spartans apparently can't subtract

Sometimes, the trouble is worth it. I mean, I waited for weeks to get my hands on Stephen King's Lisey's Story , almost cussing out a librarian in the process. My wait was more than worth it as it turned out to be a very good book. The same goes with Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. My... Read full review »

I just woke up after about 6 hours of sleep and all I can say is wow! Last night I saw the midnight premiere of 300 and I can still see the fantastic scenes from this amazing movie in my head after dreaming about them all night. I had seen all the previews and heard all the hype and even though I... Read full review »

"300" is based on a graphic novel (same name) by Frank Miller. Its about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Where the King of Sparta (Leonidas)led his army against King Xerxes and his advancing Persians army.

A film that's not historically accurate. For it possesses mystical elements... Read full review »

Pros Story, acting, artistic vision of the director
Cons Will be too violent for many viewers

I'm not a reader of graphic novels but I have enjoyed both the films based on Frank Miller's work including "Sin City" and this film. Since I had not read the source material for this film, I really didn't know what to expect other than from the trailers I'd seen.

An intense recreation of the battle of Thermopylae

byhist Apr 1, 2007
50 Helpfuls 51 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good acting from the leads, cinematography and fight scenes. Intense
Cons Not many real characters, takes some historical liberty, overwrought at times

I learned something from the film 300 that the producers probably didn't intend. Evidently, the Spartans were actually Scottish. I say that only because the memorable ones in the movie spoke with a Scottish accent. I kid, of course, but I only do so because I loved this movie, warts and all. Yes,... Read full review »

300 Widescreen (2007 Dvd Movie) Sealed - Gerald Butler

Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, 300 takes over the screen like an invading horde. With all the gushing blood of a horror movie and the scope of a classic epic, the second film from Zack Snyder (who helmed the 2004 remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD) is an impressive visual spectacle. Gerard Butler (THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) plays Leonidas, the king of ancient Sparta. The city is famous for its warrior philosophy, and Leonidas won't kneel to the demands of Persia's King Xerxes (LOST's Rodrigo Santoro). Instead, Leonidas leads his 300-strong army against Xerxes's army of millions. Meanwhile, his wife (Lena Headley, THE BROTHERS GRIMM) campaigns in Sparta for the city to send reinforcements as she butts heads with the treacherous Theron (Dominic West, THE WIRE).With its gore and scale, 300 marks director Snyder as a possible successor to Peter Jackson's throne. Jackson also got his start in horror with BAD TASTE and DEAD ALIVE, and the two men share a penchant for ambitious battle scenes. The
