The Bottom Line:
If you have ATT DSL service for your internet, I would recommend this.
I have been an ATT DSL customer for years and never have been really impressed by the service. I've had a couple of the Speedstream modems in the past and always had problems with them dropping the connection and very slow speed for the 4 computers on our home network. I purchased the 2Wire 2791hg-b Gateway modem only because this is one of the only off-the-shelf products ATT Internet will support. There are many superior products on the market, but if you hook up anything not on ATT's "approved" list, they won't give you the time of day if you ever dare call for some kind of support issue.
I have to say, I was very impressed by the ease and "out of the box" setup this had. I simply plugged it in, and as soon as I pulled up a web page, it went straight to ATT's site, connected, and automatically configured. It was a breeze and worked the first time.
The instructions that come with the equipment is terrible and if you want to tweak any of the settings you'll have to Google for help as the documentation is so bad. I couldn't even find in the manual how to get to the router settings. (Which by the way is accessed by typing "homeportal" in your browser)
I like the fact that this is a "gateway" meaning the modem and router are all in the single unit. It supports 4 network ports, plus wireless. Even the wireless setup was a breeze.
As far as speed goes, I would say this is so so at best. We pages are usually a bit slow to load when I first open a browser, but then the connection is good and all other pages load nice and fast. I haven't experienced any disconnect problems like I had with the Speedstream in the almost 3 weeks I've had it.
I paid $99 for it from Best Buy, but if you sign up for new internet, you can often get the modem thrown in. Otherwise, if you can wait for it to ship, I think you can get it about $20 cheaper directly from ATT.
